Sea otter raft – Image 2037

Sea otters float at attention watching my boat slowly drift toward them. I was on assignment shooting photos for my newest book on Glacier Bay National Park when I came upon these otters across Icy Strait from the park's entrance. I shot the photo using a Nikon F/5 camera body with a 300mm f/4 lens on Velvia film pushed one stop to ASA 100. This photo can be found in my newest book, Glacier Bay National Park: Alaska on pages 60-61. Thank you.-Mark Kelley

Raft, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2035

Mendenhall Glacier is Juneau's most popular tourist destination and Alaska's third most popular tourist attraction. Thousand of visitors take the raft trip starting in the Mendenhall Lake, traveling down the Mendenhall river and pulling out downstream some 5 miles at Brotherhood Park. I shot this photo standing on the shore along the Mendenhall Campground with a Nikon F5 camera body using a 80-200mm F/2.8 lens (polarized) on Velvia film. This photo is the cover image for my 2001 Juneau ...

Float plane, Misty Fiords National Monument, Alaska – Image 2036

I shot this photo of a float plane flying into Punchbowl Cove, Misty Fiords National Monument from a chase plane. Punchbowl Cove is remarkable for the 3,000 vertical wall that arises from the waters of Rudyerd Bay. Misty Fiords (just outside Ketchikan, Alaska) is a 2.2 million acre wilderness area created by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. I shot this photo with a Nikon F4 camera body using a 35-70mm F/2.8 lens (polarized) on Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

Haines Harbor, Southeast Alaska – Image 2015

The city of Haines is located at the head of Lynn Canal about 70 miles north of Juneau. Fort Seward and Chilkat Mountains provides the backdrop for Haines harbor. Fort Seward was built as any Army post in 1903 and was named a National Historic Site in 1972. I shot this photo with a Nikon F5 using a polarized 35-70mm F/2.8 lens with Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

Alaska State Ferry, Lynn Canal, Southeast Alaska – Image 2016

I was leaving Auke Bay on a small boat on my way to Glacier Bay about 6am in the morning. It was kind of a blah, overcast, nothing-special day until the rain squall hit and the sun broke through a hole in the cloud. It was all over in about two minutes. I shot this photo with my Nikon F5 using my 80-200mm F/2.8 lens with a polarizing filter on Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

Calving Lamplugh Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2007

I had been at Lamplugh Glacier all day and had missed a number of good calving photos because of bad luck and poor timing. Finally as evening light approached, I decided to stop all activity and wait for the calve. About an hour into my wait, the best calve of the day happened and I got it on film. I shot this photo with a Nikon F5 camera body with a 35 to 75mm F/2.8 Nikor lens on Velvia film.-Mark Kelley
