Juneau is divided up into seven major regions: Downtown, Thane, Douglas, Douglas Island, the Valley, North Douglas and Out the Road. Out the Road starts just past Auke Bay around mile 12 and goes to the end of the road, Echo Cove at mile 40. The views of the mountains and Lynn Canal around Eagle Beach around mile 36 should rate this drive on the top of the national scenic road system. But, it does even get a listing. It is amazing how common the extraordinary is to us when we live here ...

I love this view of planes landing with the Mendenhall Glacier as the backdrop taken from the wetlands. Here, an Alaska Airlines jet looks like it landing on the glacier when in reality the glacier is a good five to six miles from the airport. I shot this image with a moderate telephoto lens trying to compress the distance between the jet and the glacier. The image has to be carefully shot because the space where this photo works does not last long. This image illustrates the month of ...

Today it is snowing in town and snowing very heavy in the mountains. I think winter is officially here. This image was taken in early January of the docks at Auke Bay. Mostly the ice does not form around the docks because there is too much tidal action. But, in this case it had been cold for a while and the ice formed inside the dock. This sunset was really this vibrant and the person walking into the frame just happened along right at the exact moment I need someone in the frame at the ...

Auke Lake is one of my all time favorite photo locations in Juneau. The calm water and mountain backdrop make for wonderful mirror reflections. The Juneau campus of the University of Alaska Southeast shares this view
just how lucky can a college student be? I try to put a new photo of Auke Lake in each calendar. I shot this photo a day before the lake froze for the season. This image illustrates the month of February in my Juneau Alaska 2013 Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for ...

A couple of summers ago, I had a contract with an Anchorage advertising agency (Bradley Reid & Associates) that had been awarded the job of directing the state of Alaska tourism campaign. I was shooting images for the state vacation planner. I was up on Thunder Mountain shooting the overlook of the Mendenhall Glacier in late August which ended up as the cover of the 2011 Alaska State Vacation Planner. I spent the night on the mountain in tents with the models hoping to do a follow-up ...

My go-to place to photograph wildlife is Anan Creek. The place is famous for its populations of black and brown bears, but I find it a fantastic place to photograph eagles especially in July. I shot this bald eagle from the bear viewing platform at the falls at Anan Creek. The eagle was sitting on a log next to young spruce tree that was using the fallen tree as a nurse log. In my last three calendars, my eagle photos have all come from Anan shoots. This image illustrates the month of ...
