The University of Alaska Fairbanks, my alma mater, invited me to spend four days this week with students in the Communication and Journalism Department. I will be giving a lecture on my journey as a photographer and this has given me time to reflect on how lucky I am. My work has allowed me to travel to many of the wild places in this beautiful state I live in, with many more wild places to go…

A growing number of surf enthusiasts are hanging out on Juneau, Alaska, beaches looking and waiting for just the right waves. In early November I spent two cold nights on a northern lights watch in front of the Mendenhall Glacier. I logged four-hours each night and got two ten-minute opportunities of actual shooting time, and what a great twenty minutes! A whale breach usually comes out of nowhere, and everything happens so fast that it is almost impossible to frame and capture the breach with your camera. The good news is that a whale will often breach multiple times after its first breach. So if you missed the first jump do not put the camera down while cursing the image you just missed, because you are about to miss it again.
