I think every kid in Juneau at one time in their life has sledded on this hill. I know I spent countless hours with my boys on this slope. Juneau finally got its first snowfall of the season on Tuesday. According to the weather service, the usual date for the first snowfall is historically November 6. We are a wee bit late this year. Black Wolf (Romeo), Mendenhall Lake, Juneau – Image 2696

The black wolf known as Romeo had spent over seven years in and around the Mendenhall Glacier and was one of Juneau's most beloved treasures. I took this photo of him in late March of 2009, and in September of 2009 two thoughtless low-lifes illegally killed him. Snowboarders riding the Eaglecrest Ski Area's Ptarmigan Chairlift are silhouetted against Mt. Ben Stewart. Some refer to Eaglecrest as "The Best Little Ski Area in the World". I would agree with the sentiment especially when you have a mountain backdrop like this one. November usually brings the first heavy snows of the winter. During one extreme winter I can remember six feet of snow around my house in downtown Juneau by the end of November. I think the earliest the local ski area opened was around November 16th. Auke Bay is a beautiful setting for a harbor, and Mt. The approaching winter starts freezing up the local environment, and the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier become relatively safer to explore. Exploring the ice caves along the edge of a moving glacier is dangerous and probably not a recommended recreation. But with that said, a lot of Juneauites go to the glacier to visit the caves.
