Sledding Hill, Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2699

Sledding Hill, Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2699

I think every kid in Juneau at one time in their life has sledded on this hill. I know I spent countless hours with my boys on this slope. The glacier is just off to the right about a mile away across the lake. There aren't many places in the world one can take their kids sledding next to a glacier. I would like the photos in all my calendars to be visual knock outs, but sometimes the images I put in there are more quiet and serene and maybe a little bit sentimental. Juneauites will ...

Ptarmigan Chairlift, Eaglecrest Ski Area, Douglas Island, Mt. Ben Stewart, Juneau – Image 2697

Juneau finally got its first snowfall of the season on Tuesday. According to the weather service, the usual date for the first snowfall is historically November 6. We are a wee bit late this year. Of course, I love snow and am always looking forward to dumps and dumps of the white stuff. This photo is taken from the same position that I took number 2695 that was posted on 11-10. I just moved back about 100 yards and framed the photo through the spruce trees. I liked both photos and ...

Black Wolf (Romeo), Mendenhall Lake, Juneau – Image 2696

The black wolf known as Romeo had spent over seven years in and around the Mendenhall Glacier and was one of Juneau's most beloved treasures. I took this photo of him in late March of 2009, and in September of 2009 two thoughtless low-lifes illegally killed him. There will be a memorial service for Romeo held this Saturday on November 20th at the West Glacier Trail raft launch at 1pm. Everyone I knew in Juneau loved Romeo. In the late winter/early spring of 2009, I tried to spend as ...

Ptarmigan Chairlift, Eaglecrest Ski Area, Douglas Island, Mt. Ben Stewart, Juneau – Image 2695

Snowboarders riding the Eaglecrest Ski Area's Ptarmigan Chairlift are silhouetted against Mt. Ben Stewart. Some refer to Eaglecrest as "The Best Little Ski Area in the World". I would agree with the sentiment especially when you have a mountain backdrop like this one. Photographically, when shooting a silhouette it's really important to make sure the background behind the subject is clean. The smooth snow makes for a perfect silhouette. I will be leading a small boat photo cruise in ...

Auke Bay Harbor Juneau, Alaska – Image 2694

November usually brings the first heavy snows of the winter. During one extreme winter I can remember six feet of snow around my house in downtown Juneau by the end of November. I think the earliest the local ski area opened was around November 16th. Auke Bay is a beautiful setting for a harbor, and Mt. McGinnis is the exclamation point to this impressive mountain environment. I like shooting my winter shots during the morning's first light because of the strong rich color of the light and ...

Ice Caves, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2693

The approaching winter starts freezing up the local environment, and the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier become relatively safer to explore. Exploring the ice caves along the edge of a moving glacier is dangerous and probably not a recommended recreation. But with that said, a lot of Juneauites go to the glacier to visit the caves. This photo is of my friend, Joe, checking out the frozen arch. Many folks also visit the ice caves in the summer but those summer-time caves are ...
