Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2606

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2606

I am repeating this photo because I was preparing it for a recent contest entry. Upon revisiting the photo, I realized how much I like this amazing moment and how rarely for me everything comes together so well. All the elements of this photo work including the birds breaking into the sky, the ocean crashing on the beach, the lone figure at the wave’s edge and finally the small second lone figure off in the far, far distance. For me this photo is very dream-like and can be found on pages ...
Surprise Glacier, Prince William Sound, Alaska – Image 2605

Surprise Glacier, Prince William Sound, Alaska – Image 2605

I was shooting a book on Alaska and making aerial photos of Prince William Sound. When I left from Seward, Alaska in a small chartered airplane, the skies were clear. By the time I got over Prince William Sound (about an hour away), the area was shrouded in low lying clouds. The view of the Surprise Glacier was the only opening I got in the clouds covering the area during that three hour flight (which cost about $1,500.00). Sometimes photography can be very expensive. Nikon F4, Lens: ...
Iceberg Bird, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2604

Iceberg Bird, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2604

Pigeon Guillemots spend their summers in Alaska and are a very common sight in Glacier Bay National Park. I was photographing a book on Glacier Bay National Park and generally placing the bird in the environment that helps define its habitat. The red-footed bird resting on a small iceberg helps place this bird in Alaska and Glacier Bay National Park. This photo can be found on page 25 in my book, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, which has sold over 70,000 copies. Nikon F4, Lens: 300mm ...
Rainbow Boat, Cross Sound, Alaska – Image 2603

Rainbow Boat, Cross Sound, Alaska – Image 2603

I am repeating this photo because I was preparing it for a recent contest entry. Upon revisiting the photo, I realized how much I like this amazing moment. It was raining so hard for so long the world was soaked. I was in a skiff and had thrown my cameras in a Halliburton case in the bottom of the boat. The cameras were dry, but I had no chance to use them in the relentless day-long downpour. Then all of the sudden the skies parted for about ten minutes and the rainbow splashed across ...
Iced Tern, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2602

Iced Tern, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2602

Arctic terns are the long distance champions of the bird world. They live in perpetual summer and almost perpetualdaylight: living one summer in Antarctica and then migrating to Alaska to spend another summer in Arctic. I shot this photo from my kayak while working on a book about Glacier Bay National Park. Usually when I work from a kayak I like to be in a double and have an assistant along with me to help with the paddling and positioning. By myself, it always seems like I should be ...
Northern Lights, Gastineau Channel, Alaska – Print #P141 – Image 2601

Northern Lights, Gastineau Channel, Alaska – Print #P141 – Image 2601

I love to watch and photograph the northern lights. But, lately the northern lights have become a rare occurrence. Scientists tell us that the northern lights (frequency and intensity) have an eleven year cycle with the bottom of the cycle occurring about three years ago. My observations or lack of aurora observations would confirm this cycle. But on a clear night when I start to get excited about photographing the northern lights, I check the website at the University of ...
