Sitka, Alaska – Image 2853

Sitka, Alaska – Image 2853

The town of Sitka in Southeast Alaska has one of the most stunning backdrop of mountains of any town I know of in Alaska. I was there just after it had snowed over a foot and then the weather cleared. I was indoors all day shooting a magazine assignment of a weaver, and it was just driving me nuts knowing how gorgeous it was outside. I had to fly back home to Juneau that evening and on my way to the airport I stopped to take this photo. The secret to shooting night photos is to shoot the ...

Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2852

This is my friend, Dave Haas, horsing around in front of the face of the Mendenhall Glacier. I was on an assigned shoot for Bradley-Reid, the State of Alaska’s advertising agency, to promote winter tourism. I wanted to show the scale of the glacier and just how accessible it is. In the winter it is about a half hour walk across the frozen lake to the front of the glacier from the visitor center’s parking lot. The glacier ice is much bluer (prettier) in the winter than in the summer, and I ...

Lynn Canal, Commercial Fishing – Image 2851

This is an older image I dug out of my slide files shot around 1981 when the Juneau area still had a commercial herring seine opening. Purse seiners anchor at South Bridget Cove next to Mab Island at mile 37 along the road north of Juneau which ends at mile 40 (Echo Cove). The purse siene fleet was in the area to fish a spring herring opening. The year after this photo was taken the Alaska Department of Fish and Game closed the fishery for good in the Juneau area because of low stocks. ...

Downtown, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2855

This is the view from my home on the top of Starr Hill. I think it is one of the beautiful views I can image of any city and am lucky to wake up every morning taking all of this in. This winter has been wet and warm at sea level. Eaglecrest, the local ski area, which up in the mountains is getting good coverage and skiing has been a lot of fun. The top has 135 inches (11 feet) of all natural snow and the base depth is at 35 inches (three feet) of all natural snow. Thank you for ...
