Kayaker and Paddle Boarder, Lena Cove, Juneau, Alaska # 2974

Kayaker and Paddle Boarder, Lena Cove, Juneau, Alaska # 2974

Sunset was shaping up to be quite unbelievable in Lena Cove, just a half mile from my home, and when I arrived on the beach just one element was missing to set the scene. Out of the blue a kayaker and a paddle boarder came cruising by while sunset colors were peaking. How lucky was that? It felt like winning the lottery. This image illustrates the month of October in my 2017 Juneau Calendar. Enjoy the photo. Thanks for visiting - Camera: Nikon D800,  Lens: Nikkor 24-120mm F/4.5-5.6, ISO ...

Kayaker, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, Alaska, Image #2973

It had been raining on and off for two weeks straight here in Southeast Alaska. The world just outside the entrance to Fords Terror was soaking in rainforest green. Glacier silt, or rock flour, suspended in the tidal waters turned the water yet another shade of green. The waterfalls were swollen to bursting size. And the orange clad kayak ranger in his yellow kayak provided a perfect contrast to this very green, green world. This image illustrates the month of August in my 2017 Juneau ...

Bull Moose, Denali National Park, Alaska Image #2972

In the Juneau area where I live year round, we don’t really see moose. Every once in a while, we hear of a moose, but the sightings are very rare. When I am Denali, I always plan on finding a moose. I hope to find one this week while I am the photo leader for Camp Denali’s annual fall photo seminar. Last summer I photographed this moose while it played hide and seek with me in the thick willow bushes. Moose can be quite aggressive and dangerous so I used a very long lens (600mm) to keep my ...
Grizzly Bear, Denali National Park, Alaska – #2971

Grizzly Bear, Denali National Park, Alaska – #2971

I am the lucky guy that got to spend the first week of August in Denali National Park, and now I get to go back again for the last week of this month. I am returning as the photo leader for Camp Denali’s annual fall photo seminar. The highlight this time of year is the autumn tundra colors, plus wildlife in its prime preparing for the rut and the approaching winter. During my first trip this summer, I shot this photo of a grizzly bear climbing up a hill.  I like this photo because the ...
Black Oystercatcher, Glacier bay National Park, Alaska – Image #2970

Black Oystercatcher, Glacier bay National Park, Alaska – Image #2970

About a month ago, I lead a photo tour for Dolphin Charters through Glacier Bay National Park. I always enjoy my time with my good friends Ronn Paterson, on board the 50-foot m/v Delphinus. This is one of my favorite images from that week-long adventure. Oystercatchers are very noisy, bold shorebirds that have all sorts of ways of leading an intruder away from their nesting areas. These two were hanging out just offshore and quickly flew over to greet us as we walked the shoreline. Since ...

Grizzly Bear, Denali National Park, Alaska…Image #2969

I just returned from a rainy week photographing Denali National Park and this image of a grizzly bear is one of my favorites. Folks often ask me just how patient one has to be in order to be a successful nature/wildlife photographer. This shoot is a great answer to that question. I spent six days in the park and had at most only six hours of concentrated-productive photography due to rain, the closure of the Park Road because of a mudslide, and just some plain bad luck. I had just two 10 ...
