I love this view of downtown Juneau, Alaska, shot from the Juneau Tram at that magical hour where the disappearing sunset dissolves into evening. Last week I posted a collage of four hummingbird photos and asked for your help in picking one to appear in a future Mark Kelley calendar. The response was overwhelming. Right now, the field of wildflowers at Point Bridget State Park is stunning. I took this photo last Thursday and the shooting stars and buttercups were everywhere and beginning to peak. The lupine was just starting up with some bunches here and there in full bloom. Chocolate lilies are coming up next in the blooming succession, followed by wild irises, and finishing up with fields of fireweed in July. This park is a magical spot at the end of the road. Last week I spent some time at Gull Cove Lodge, operated by my dear friends, Paul Johnson, Tami Mulick and their adult children, Rick and Alice. I spent a lot of time at the three hummingbird feeders on the deck rail. Paul tells me there have been at least eight generations of hummingbirds that annually return to his lodge starting in April and leaving some time in July. While on a low-tide walk along the shores of Berners Bay near Juneau, Alaska, a birder stops to observe a green-winged teal that just landed in the middle of the mirror reflection of Lions Head Mountain.
