The wedding party from last week's image moved to the Brotherhood Bridge for another set of family photos with the Mendenhall Glacier in the background. I was photographing the bride and groom with the groom's brother and wife. They had very colorful umbrellas with them. I asked them to spin the umbrellas, turned my shutter speed down to 1/15 of a second in order to create the spinning blur. The blur was my solution to having the faces pop from the background while not allowing the highly ...

I have not shot a wedding for pay since Governor Hammond asked me to photograph his daughter's wedding in the mid-80's over 20 years ago. I usually always say no but this wedding seemed different enough to say yes to, in a moment of weakness. The couple was from Australia and family and friends were arriving from across the country and globe. After the ceremony, the wedding party went to Photo Point at the Mendenhall Glacier for the standard family shots. I was able to capture this ...

I photographed this image in early June while on assignment for my book on Alaska. Located just outside Ketchikan in southern Southeast Alaska, Misty Fjords is a huge land mass cut up by deep glacier-carved fjords and dotted with many high alpine lakes. The outlet for this lake is a very tall waterfall. I photographed this image from the open window on the front passenger side of a Beaver float plane. Althought not as convenient as a helicopter, the plane costs about 1/3 of what a ...

I photographed this mountain goat billy in late May from a boat in Tracy Arm. May and early June are a person's best chance of seeing mountain goats near tide line. The mountain-top snows have not totally disappeared so the goats stay at the lower elevations waiting for the snow to recede. Later in the season the mountain goats live at the tops of the mountains and at best are only white specks even with large telephoto lens. This photo illustrates the month of April in my 2010 ...

It is finally flower season in Juneau. We had a long winter which just hung on and on and on. The totem pole next to the Juneau City Museum carved by master carver, Amos Wallace, is surrounded by three types of flowers at this time a year including Lilac, Mountain Ash, and Hawthorne. I used a long lens to eliminate distracting backgrounds and to compress the totem against the flowering trees and shrubs. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Nikon F4, Lens: 300mm f/2.8 Nikkor, ...

R.T. "Skip" Wallen bronze bear sculpture in front of the Alaska state capital building is the locals and tourists' favorite piece of public art in Juneau. A group of local citizens in Juneau is trying to line up money for his next project which will be a life-scale bronze sculpture of a breaching humpback whale jumping out of a reflecting pool on the Juneau waterfront. For more information on the proposed project go to the Juneau Arts and Humanities website at www.jahc.org. Enjoy the photo ...
