From a boat, I had been photographing mountain goats eating seaweed at thetideline when I heard the glacier crack. I quickly swung and startedshooting the calving glacier. Luckily, I was on auto focus and autoexposure. I would never have had time to make the exposure and focusadjustments manually because everything was happening so fast. To myamazement the camera was able to make the adjustments, and all I had to dowas to compose. This photo illustrates the month of March in my ...

Over 300,000 cruise ship visitors go to Glacier Bay National Park and get tosee Margerie Glacier located at the end of Tarr Inlet in the West Arm. Ishot this photo from the shore about 2.5 miles away from the glacier whileworking on my book on Glacier Bay. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 80-200mm f/4Nikkor, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia (35mm color slide film) polarized.-Mark Kelley

Few sights in Southeast Alaska so delight the eye as Creek Street, built on pillings above Ketchikan Creek. The wooden boardwalk, rimmed now with galleries and shops, was the red light district of Ketchikan during the rowdier days when loggers and fisherman came to town looking for entertainment. The city closed the twenty-odd houses in 1953. Locals used to say that Creek Street was the place where, "both fish and fisherman went upstream to spawn." This photo illustrates the month of ...

I shot this photo in the October of 2003. Usually the fall in Juneau is nothing but pouring rain. Last October we had two weeks of sunshine. An outdoor remodeling project took priority over shooting the sunny October. I got away for one afternoon and shot this photo on one of my most favorite hiking trails. I look at this shot and think I am in Colorado. This photo illustrates the month of October in my 2005 Juneau Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, ...

Glacier bears are black bears with a genetic variation that gives their fur the frosty sheen of ice and clouds. These bears are very rare and only live in the area of northern Southeast Alaska from Juneau to Yakutat. I have found the largest concentration of glacier bears in Glacier Bay National Park. This photo illustrates the month of June in my 2005 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 500mm f/4 Nikkor, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia (35mm color slide film).-Mark Kelley
