Sunrise, Juneau from the Douglas Island Meadows – Image 2287

I shot this image from the meadows on Doulgas Island below Mt. Jumbo. The shot is of downtown Juneau at sunrise in late Febraury. Every Juneau Calendar needs at least one shot of downtown Juneau. The calendar is in its 14th year. Every year, I struggle finding a new and unique view of the town. After hiking to this meadow for years in the summer, it finally dawned on me that this would be a great winter shot. I waited for a fresh snow followed by a clear day…pretty rare in Juneau. I ...

Eaglecrest Ski Area, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2286

A skier finds fresh tracks just out-of-bounds at Juneau's Eaglecrest Ski Area. The backdrop to this winter paradise is Admiralty Island and Stephens Passage. Hiking for fresh tracks in and around the ski area is a very popular pastime of most serious skiers and boarders. Slush Cup, Eaglecrest Ski Area, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2285

For the past three years, Juneau's local ski area, Eaglecrest, has closed its season with a slush cup. The skiers, often in costume, race down the mountain and try to ski across a man-made lake. To the delight of the crowd, most skiers and boarders crash big time. Here, a high school racer in her tutu attempts the pool. This photo illustrates the month of March in the 2003 Juneau Calendar. Fairweather Range, Inian Islands, South Pass, Southeast Alaska – Image 2284

I shot this sunrise on the Fairweather Range standing on a rock that shows only at low tide in the middle of South Pass at the end of February. I am shooting up the area known as the Laundry by the locals. This was the same skiff trip I took to get the photo of the winter lighthouse. Pt. Retreat Lighthouse, Lynn Canal, Alaska – Image 2283

Most people have put their skiffs and boats away for the winter and it is hard to get out on the water on those beautiful winter days. I shot this photo on a skiff ride over to my friend's summer home in Icy Strait in February. We were going over to do a few days of work on his place and to enjoy the great winter weather in the wilderness. This photo illustrates the month of February in my 2003 Southeast Alaska calendar.
