Killer Whales, Icy Strait, Alaska – Image 2250

Killer Whales, Icy Strait, Alaska – Image 2250

I shot this photo while camping along the shores of Icy Strait. I go to this area to mostly photograph humpback whales which hang out in large number in the summer. I was only able to stay with these killer whales for about an hour before they moved on. This photo illustrates page 64 in my book, Glacier Bay National Park: Alaska. Camera: Nikon F4, Lens: 80-200mm f/2.8 zoom, film: Fuji Velvia.-Mark Kelley

Mountain Goat, Tracy Arm, Alaska – Image 2249

This mountain goat billy had traveled down to the tideline in Tracy Arm to eat the seaweed. He was traveling with a whole group of goats. The best chance of seeing goats at tideline is usually in May when the snows up high can keep the goats closer to sea level. Camera: F4, Lens: 300mm f/4, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia.-Mark Kelley

Float Plane over Juneau Icefield, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2248

On a clear day in April, a Wings of Alaska float plane cruises over the Juneau Icefield. I shot this photo from another chase plane. The Juneau Icefield is a Rhode Island-sized ice mass that spawns more than 30 major glaciers including the Mendenhall and the Taku. Camera: Nikon F4, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 zoom, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia.-Mark Kelley

Humpback whales, Stephens Passage, Alaska – Image 2247

Lunge feeding humpback whales break the surface of Stephen Passage with mouths open hoping to net a school of herring. Acting in unison, a group of humpbacks find a school of herring. Then, the whales encircle the herring with a column of bubbles blown through their blow hole. Finally, the whales swim up through the column of bubbles and herring with mouths open scoping up their prey. Camera: Nikon F-4, Lens: 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor, film: 35mm Fuji Velvia-Mark Kelley
Ice skating, Mendenhall Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2246

Ice skating, Mendenhall Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2246

It is still very wintery in the Juneau area. Skating on all of local lakes and ponds has been fanastic. I shot this photo of my brother skating on the Mendenhall Lake looking from the glacier back up the Mendenhall Valley to the west. Disney used this photo for a European poster advertising a movie about a hockey team in Alaska called Mystery, Alaska. Camera: Nikon F-4, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, Film: Fuji Velvia-Mark Kelley
