Saxman Totem Park, Ketchikan, Alaska – Image 2568

I have photographed Saxman many times and was never very happy with the results. I was up early one morning and went to Saxman out of boredom. I had always thought the early morning light rising behind Saxman would be too harsh. Boy was I wrong. The early morning light was fantastic, giving the scene more depth and separation. The warmth of the morning light improved the color. This image illustrates the month of August in my Southeast Alaska 2009 Calendar and is on page 34 of the Alaska: ...

Hubbard Glacier, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska – Image 2567

I was working on my final shoot for my Alaska book and needed a couple of good photos of Hubbard Glacier just outside Yakutat. It was early September and the Yakutat airport was fogged for my morning arrival. The day was just gorgeous and I could not wait around for another opportunity. I chartered a local company “Wings of Alaska” and went for a three hour flight. The flight cost the proverbial arm and leg and more than I want to tell my wife but I got my two images for my book. This ...

Bald Eagle, Alaska – Image 2566

I switched to full-time digital photography last May and this image was one of my first shoots. When a bald eagle glides down to pick a herring off the water, it will often transfer the catch from its feet to its beak in midair. I was shooting the eagle with my 80-400 totally racked out giving me an equivalent focal length of around 600mm. I was hand holding, using an ISO of 200 and focus-tracking to get this flying bird sharp. This image illustrates the month of March in my Southeast ...

Ice Climbing, Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska-Image – Image 2565

A climber claws his way up the face of the Mendenhall Glacier with Mount Stroller White in the background. Since the glacier can calve from its front edge or face, climbing a glacier face is not a recommended practice. I just happened to be at the glacier when the climber was ascending. I would have never asked anyone to climb the face, but took advantage of a found situation which made a really cool photo. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor Polarized, Film 35mm Velvia slide ...

Dalton Highway, Arctic Alaska, Alaska – Image 2564

Every two years the Alaska State Museum in Juneau sponsors the most prestigious statewide juried photography competition called “Alaska Positive”. This year “The Dalton Highway” was juried into the show. Alaska Positive opens Friday, May 2, at the State Museum in Juneau and runs through the summer. The show which accepted 57 prints from throughout the state spends the next two years traveling the state. This photo also appears in my new book, “Alaska: A Photographic Excursion” on page ...

Dall Sheep Ram, Denali National Park, Alaska – Image 2563

Dall sheep and mountain goats live in a crazy vertical world of cliffs that for anything but them are sure death to cross. I shot this photo in Denali National Park using my 500mm lens braced on my backpack. I have very little luck with big lenses on tripods. Whenever possible I try to lie down on the ground and nestle the long lens down on top of my backpack. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 500mm f/4 Nikkor, Film 35mm Velvia slide film. Mark Kelley
