Caribou, Alaska Range, Denali National Park, Alaska – Image 2508

A bull caribou eats its way along the tundra in Denali National Park. I was fighting the weather, mostly rain the entire week I was there in the summer of 2006. I had this incredible break in the weather over the Alaska Range with the dark storm clouds obscuring clear skies behind them. I shot this photo from as low of a position as possible trying to move the caribou silhouette up into the mountains. The brushy conditions prevented me from moving the animal any higher in the frame. ...

Bucarelli Bay Moon, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska – Image 2507

I was traveling out of Graig on Prince of Wales Island for an early morning shoot and this incredible moon set was happening. The sun was not fully up. I was sure I could not hold steady enough in a bobbing boat to capture the scene unfolding before me. I shot away with a medium sized lens and my wide angles. The light and scene was gone in minutes. With some incredible good fortune the images were sharp. This photo appears in my new book, Alaska: A Photographic Excursion, released ...

Brown Bear Prints and Bald Eagle Feather – Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2505

I came across these brown bear prints at the high tide line of a sandy beach in Glacier Bay. Just out of the frame was this beautiful bald eagle feather. I moved the feather over about two feet and made this image. This image illustrates page 55 in my book on Glacier Bay National Park. Bear Bread and Dwarf Dogwood, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2504

Bear Bread and Dwarf Dogwood, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2504

Bear bread is a fungus that grows on spruce trees. I like this image because the white dwarf dogwood looks like an earring on the ear-shaped bear bread. This image illustrates page 86 in my book on Glacier Bay National Park. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 28-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens, Film 35mm Velvia slide film-Mark Kelley

Black legged Kittiwakes – Glacier Bay National Park – Image 2503

Black-legged kittiwakes nest along the cliffs of Glacier Bay. There are several nesting colonies in Glacier Bay with the colony near Margerie Glacier containing over a 1,000 nesting pairs. This image illustrates page 80 in my book on Glacier Bay National Park. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 300mm f/4 Nikkor lens, Film 35mm Velvia slide film.-Mark Kelley
