So Honored #3083

So Honored #3083

I am so proud and honored to announce that National Wildlife® Magazine selected this image of my wife cross-country skiing through the snowy field in Spaulding Meadows for first place in the “People In Nature” category in their 2018 photo contest. Over 23,000 images were entered in eight different categories. The image will be featured in National Wildlife® magazine’s December-January 2018 issue. This same image illustrates the month of December in my 2019 Juneau Calendar and the month of ...
Glacier Blue #3082

Glacier Blue #3082

Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness near Juneau, Alaska, is one of my favorite places to search for beautiful icebergs. Locals sometimes refer to the icebergs in Tracy Arm as glacier jewels. The deep blue colors of glacier ice are such an amazing, almost unreal sight, and being able to take a piece of nature’s beauty home with you is now possible with my brand new Glacier Blue scarf. This new scarf arrived just in time for the Juneau Public Market, our local holiday market, and it is also ...
Moose, Lynn Canal, Inside Passage, Alaska #3081

Moose, Lynn Canal, Inside Passage, Alaska #3081

Never in my born days did I think I would see a momma moose and her calves swimming across the open ocean, especially in such a large body of water like Lynn Canal near Point Couverden. I shot this image from a boat using a very long lens so our presence would not add any more stress to an already stressful situation for the moose. To my relief the moose family turned back toward the shore. We motored away with the moose standing safely on solid ground. Weeks later I was speaking with a ...
Calving, Johns Hopkins Glacier, Glacier Bay NP #3081

Calving, Johns Hopkins Glacier, Glacier Bay NP #3081

I have been shooting calving glaciers for over 38 years, and have been lucky enough to have witnessed hundreds of calving events. Sadly most of the images just do not work. It is terribly frustrating bearing witness to such amazing powers of nature and not being able to translate that moment into a still image. In person the sight and sounds are totally mind blowing, but in a frozen still image the photo can look static and the falling ice just blends in perfectly with the face of ...
Black Bear, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, AK #3080

Black Bear, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, AK #3080

One of the most beloved and recognizable bears along Steep Creek in the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area is bear #25, also affectionately known by locals as “Nicky”. In this image I shot on Saturday, she catches a very large coho salmon in Steep Creek and brings it back to her two cubs. Two weeks ago heavy rainfalls brought a lot of coho salmon up the creek. This late fall run is so important for the bears in the Mendenhall Glacier area as it provides the last chance to fatten up for the ...
Exit Glacier, Kenai Fjords NP, Seward, Alaska #3079

Exit Glacier, Kenai Fjords NP, Seward, Alaska #3079

Most people do not associate autumn colors with glaciers, and for good reasons. The world’s most famous glaciers are in Antarctica and Greenland and have no deciduous trees anywhere near. In Alaska we have plenty of deciduous trees surrounding glaciers, at least at lower elevations. During a fall visit to Seward I found the Exit Glacier terminus wrapped in a blast of fall colors. As a photographer I embrace the unexpected and revel in the moment. This photo illustrates the month of ...
