Even though it is the first week of May, we are still hiking the mountains and skiing on plenty of snow around Juneau. Climbing to the top of Douglas Island just out-of-bounds from the Eaglecrest Ski Areas, a hiker can get an amazing view of Seymour Canal and Admiralty Island. This is one of my favorite views in Juneau. Again, this was a good day skiing and photographing my son, Owen. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. It seems like summer is upon us and arrived a lot earlier than normal. In March and April, northern southeast Alaska witnessed almost five weeks without rain and plenty of sunny days. In early April, we had some days in the low 60's and set multi-records for the hottest days ever. With the advent of summer, comes the summer tourist season. The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry, Matanuska, docks in Skagway and off-loads passengers. During the summer, ferries make daily roundtrips between ...

The official ski season at Eaglecrest Ski Area ended last weekend. We are now what the locals call the "Second Season". We hike for our runs because there is still plenty of snow left in the mountains and at the area. When the area closed on Sunday, the 15th, it still had 144 inches of snow on top and 96 inches at the bottom (all natural). Some years we have hiked and skied well into June. The photo is of my bigger son, Owen, who has been skiing the mountain since he was two. He is now 23, ...

The 38th annual Alaska Folk Festival hosted in Juneau, Alaska started on Monday, the 9th, and goes through Sunday, the 15th. This photo was my favorite image I took at last year's folk festival. Terri Tibbett plays her 15-minute set with friends. So much of photography is about capturing the moment, and this moment of the joy of playing music with friends is the soul of what the festival is all about. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. I took this photo of my friends and family on the Troy Mt overlook while on assignment for an Anchorage advertising agency working on the State of Alaska's tourism promotion. I secured a winter long shoot for the agency and completed the assignment in the winter of 2011. Here, Loeke (exchange student from Holland), Cris and Jan (locals) get their group photo taken by Jamie overlooking downtown Juneau and the Alaska Coastal Range surrounding Juneau. We snowshoed up the mountain and spent ...

This image is the last installment on my Anan Creek bear photos. Here, a black bear grabs a pink salmon out of Anan Creek, spins up around and heads up out of the creek into the forest to eats its meal. After catching their salmon creekside, many bears head deep into the forest to eat their meal. Dragging their salmon catch into the forest is a big help to the health of the old growth forest. The salmon caresses left by the bears fertilize the forest helping maintain the incredible ...
