In springtime one of the best places in Alaska to photograph bald eagles on icebergs is Tracy Arm, and especially South Sawyer Glacier. April and May are lean times for eagles. The salmon have not returned to the streams and eagles are hungry. Eagles hang out on the icebergs to get elevation to watch for edible things in the water, waiting for whatever comes their way. Once the salmon start running, the eagles will leave Tracy Arm for Alaska’s many salmon streams. This photo illustrates ...

I love a big beautiful face-shot of a bear, but every once in a while I like to show my wildlife subjects in their environment. In the photo business this image is called an environmental portrait. The bear walking up a mountain on a windy day, and the river running through the valley below, defines the mountain environment this grizzly calls home. I photographed this grizzly bear in Denali National Park. It illustrates the month of June in my 2019 Alaska Calendar. Thank you for visiting ...

This photo of Auke Lake illustrates the month of November in my 2019 Juneau Alaska Calendar. Besides being a beautiful shot of a classic Juneau scene, this photo defines the fall with fresh snow on the distant mountain peaks and autumn gold coloring both the alpine tundra and the marsh grass in the lake. It was a stunning fall day. Thank you for visiting and enjoy - Camera: Nikon D850, Lens: Nikkor 24-70mm, Digital Capture, Tripod, Polarized

Last Friday night I photographed the northern lights from Portland Island in Juneau, Alaska. I faced the mainland and my view included the Mendenhall Towers, Auke Bay, and Lena Cove. The light show started around 10 o’clock in the evening and it was still illuminating the night sky when I crawled into my tent exhausted around 4:45 in the morning. This particular aurora created an over-all green glow in the sky with no real defined edges. Such conditions do not really make for the best ...

A sea otter chows down on a crab leg from its chest full of Dungeness crabs. Sea otters were almost hunted to extinction by the Russian, American, and British fur traders between 1741 and 1911. Pre-contact populations were estimated at 150,000 to 300,000 animals and by 1911 their numbers had dropped to 1,000-2,000 animals. By that time sea otters were mostly found in the waters around the Aleutian Islands and there were no sea otters in Southeast Alaska. In the late sixties sea otters were ...

When I developed my first Juneau calendar in 1988 I never imagined that it would still be around in 2018! Here we are thirty years and 360 images later and still going strong. The Juneau calendar has been the rock that has kept my business going all these years. What a great run and I am so grateful to Juneau and all dedicated calendar fans out there. Cheers to many more years! - Camera: Nikon D800, Lens: Nikkor 80-400mm, Digital Capture, hand held ©Mark Kelley
