The Faces of Celebration, Juneau, Alaska-Image #2952

Celebration is a biennial festival of song and dance, food, arts, crafts, and fellowship of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures. Every other year the streets of Juneau fill with Native People of all ages dressed in the signature regalia of clans from throughout Southeast Alaska and beyond. Native Elders created Celebration in 1982 to bring Native People together to showcase and preserve their traditions and customs. Over the years the event has grown immensely and now draws about 5,000 ...

Aurora Borealis, Juneau, Alaska-Image #2952

Last night (2-17-2016) I shot this photo of the Aurora Borealis over the mountains surrounding the valley and the Mendenhall Glacier from the North Douglas boat ramp. Although I spent most of the night and early morning hours looking for northern lights, I only witnessed one powerful display sometime between 11:30pm-12:30am. The northern lights created a beautiful green arch, bridging the valley and reflecting gently in the still water. The long night of waiting and lost night of sleep was ...
Denali Park Road, Denali National Park, Alaska #2951

Denali Park Road, Denali National Park, Alaska #2951

On the road again... Mount Denali lies in the heart of Denali National Park. The 90-mile road is the only artery that links the front of the park with the back. Without a special permit, everyone has to ride a bus to see the wonders of this great national park. The bus pull-out at Stony Hill has a stunning overlook of the mountain with the tundra environment so common throughout the park. On a complete separate note, I will be the guest speaker at the Mendenhall Glacier Fireside Lecture ...

Our New View, Auke Bay, Juneau, Alaska #2950

Jan and I are celebrating our one-year anniversary in our new home “out the road”, as Juneauites like to call it. We went to an open house on 2-7-2015 and that same afternoon the previous owners accepted our offer. After living in the heart of downtown Juneau for 30 years, we were moving to the beach. We miss Starr Hill but we love the space, the place, and our waterfront view.  I think you might agree! Thank you for visiting - Camera: Nikon D800,  Lens: Nikkor 24-120 F/4, ISO 200, digital ...

Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound, Alaska-Image #2949

Alaska is a favorite cruise destination and last summer I joined Princess Cruises as an on-board lecturer. I presented a photography show to almost four hundred guests, featuring Alaska nature and wildlife images, while cruising from Whittier across the Gulf of Alaska. We were crossing the Gulf in the evening and the water was flat as a pancake. I shot this photo of a cloud blank heading toward the mountains somewhere in Prince William Sound at 11:45pm (just before midnight).  It was a ...

Denali, Denali National Park, Alaska – Image #2948

This is another image taken on my week-long pass on the Denali Park Road in August 2015. The most classic view of Denali and the Alaska Range is taken from the north end of Wonder Lake, almost at the end of the park road. My new Facebook banner features this great view with Denali reflecting on the waters of Wonder Lake. It is a jaw-dropping scene and I never tire of it. But, I started searching for something a little different…a new angle and new a view. I found a great spot high on a ...
