The willow ptarmigan is Alaska’s state bird and one of my favorite birds. Instead of migrating south for the winter, ptarmigans stay in Alaska. This bird is well adapted to survive the Alaska winter. Its feet are covered in feathers for insulation and act like snowshoes, keeping the bird on top of the snow. This image taken in mid-September shows the ptarmigan morphing from its summer brown to its winter white. This image illustrates the month of September in my 2022 Alaska Calendar. Thank ...

Purse seiners anchor in the Amalga Harbor area waiting for the annual chum salmon opening. The Douglas Island Pink & Chum (DIPAC) hatchery has a release site at Amalga Harbor. After the hatchery does their cost recovery fishery, DIPAC opens the area for a free-for-all purse seine fishery. The openings usually happen around the fourth of July but for the past three years the seine opening did not happen due to poor fish returns. This image illustrates the month of July in my 2022 Juneau ...

I visited the Mendenhall Glacier with good friends and we found this amazing surface lake on the ice. Glacier streams and sometimes small rivers can be found on the glacier surface in temperate climates. In places those streams can create lakes. These lakes often disappear just as quickly as they were created. Eventually, the water will wear a hole through the ice and will drain just like pulling a plug out of the bath tub. My friend, Bob Engelbrecht, roams around the edge of the lake to ...

I took this photo of a bald eagle on an iceberg across from Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska. It is cool to have an eagle on a glacier but for me the success of this photo is all about the color. I love the cool blue color of the iceberg contrasting with the bright hot colors reflecting in the water. The eagle and iceberg were in shadow because the sun was not high enough to light them. But, the sun was high enough to have peeked over the mountain ridge behind me. The ...

I love photographing wildlife at the Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area on Admiralty Island, which is just a short 30-minute float plane ride from Juneau, Alaska. A Sitka black-tailed deer walks along the lush wetlands at the edge of the high tideline. I took this image standing on the viewing sandspit as the deer walked by undisturbed about 50 feet away. Getting the perfect reflection in the water was a bonus. The area is closed to hunting. The up-close viewing of wildlife, especially coastal ...

A mom and cub black bear sneak by group of clueless photographers who have just left the viewing deck at the Anan Wildlife Observatory near Wrangell, Alaska. I have showed this image to a lot of people, and their reactions range from a small smile or a chuckle to an out right belly laugh. I wish I could find more images like this one. Life just gets better with humor. This image illustrates the month of July in my 2022 Alaska Calendar. Thank you for visiting and for the gift of your time. ...
