These three black bears roam the bear trail along Steep Creek at the Mendenhall Glacier. The sockeye salmon usually show up in the creek between the third week of July and first week of August. One of the best places in Alaska for whale watching is Juneau. The humpback whales return to the Juneau from the yearly migration to Hawaii sometime in April or May. Once here, they stay put for the summer. The whale activity concentrates around Shelter Island about 20 minutes by skiff from Auke Bay Harbor. Southeast Alaska is dotted with many small beautiful out-of-the-way boat harbors. The evening light and calm waters casting a mirror reflection makes this photo work. The dilapidated dock in the foreground leading into the central focus of the image really helps the composition. I had to wait a long time for this photo to develop. This is one of my favorite photos of the year. I shot this image of this pair of two-year-old juvenile brown bears at Pack Creek in August 2011. It looks like they might be fighting but in actuality they are playing. They wrestled and boxed on and off for a good ten minutes. Harbor seal, Tracy Arm, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, Alaska – Image 2787

I photographed this harbor seal in the ice in Tracy Arm. What makes this photo for me is the big beautiful round eyes of the seal and red color of the water. The red color comes from a cliff wall right behind the seal. The whole cliff is red with iron and casts a red reflection on the water. Fireweed, Chilkat Inlet, Glacier Point, Haines, Alaska – Image 2786

My thanks goes to my good friend, Skip Gray, for sharing this location with me. He was kayaking from Juneau to Haines and came upon this field of fireweed with the great mountain background. He called me on his cell and told me to get up to the area before the weather changed.
