Denali, Alaska Range, Wonder Lake #3449

Denali, Alaska Range, Wonder Lake #3449

While staying at Camp DenaIi, I shot this image from the north end of Wonder Lake with Denali casting a mirror reflection during a late August morning. Denali, in Denali National Park and Preserve, is North America’s tallest mountain at 20,310 feet, or 6,190 meters. This image illustrates the month of September in the 2023 Alaska Calendar and the cover of my 160-page book “Alaska: A Photographic Excursion.” Purchase your favorite Mark Kelley calendars and Alaska books in Juneau stores or ...
Fall in the Klondike Image #3448

Fall in the Klondike Image #3448

Juneau autumns, especially during the month of October, can be really wet, stormy and kind of miserable. The past couple years I have been taking the ferry from Juneau up to Haines or Skagway. From these two border towns I can drive the dry sunny roads of the Yukon Territory and British Columbia in Canada, searching for a rush of fall colors. 2024 Alaska Calendar Cover #3447

2024 Alaska Calendar Cover #3447

The cover of my 2024 Alaska Calendar features a photo of the northern lights in the Brooks Range, located in the high Arctic along the Dalton Highway, shot at minus 30 Fahrenheit — damn cold. My Nikon D850 camera body has never failed me but it froze up this time after four hours in the cold. The LCD screen on the back of the camera read “ERROR.” I had never seen that before, but I had to agree — the shoot was over. I have been photographing the Aurora in Alaska for almost 50 years and had ...

2024 Juneau Alaska Calendar Cover #3446

The cover of my 2024 Juneau Calendar features the northern lights over the Mendenhall Glacier. The issue marks the 35th year of publication. I turned 70 this year, so half of my life has been spent producing this calendar that celebrates my love and deep commitment to my hometown, Juneau, and the surrounding area. I still love what I do and plan to continue the tradition. I am already working on the 2025 edition. Thank you for all your support through these many years. Purchase your ...

Photo Contest Winner, Anan Bears, Alaska #3444

The National Wildlife Federation has announced the winners of its 2022 annual National Wildlife® Photo Contest. Thousands of photographers from around the world submitted more than 30,000 photos of wildlife, rich landscapes, and incredible encounters with nature. The collection of ten images of the bears of Anan Creek I submitted in the portfolio category won first place. I am so honored and excited that the images, all shot over the last thirteen years, will share the Anan story to a ...
