This is the best morning sunrise that I have ever witnessed in Juneau. Because Juneau is so far north, the sun rises in different parts of the skies depending on the season. During December and January, the sun rises almost directly down the Gastineau Channel and in July, the sun comes up 90 degrees to east or behind Mt. Roberts. This image illustrates the month of August in my 2008 Juneau Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor, Film 35mm Velvia slide film.-Mark Kelley

I shot the red northern lights over the spruce trees at the Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau. Eaglecrest is a good place to shoot the northern lights because it is far from the city lights where the night is really dark. My normal exposure for a strong show of northern lights is between thirty seconds to one and half minutes with a lens aperture of f2.8 and an ISO of 100. I have photographed a lot of northern lights, but this event was one of the most unusual. The northern lights were so strong over the community of Douglas and Mt. Jumbo that they were reflecting in the Gastineau Channel. With the northern lights bright over the town, the town lights lit up the encroaching fog to create this image. This sunrise/moonset was an amazing morning. At this time of the year, it rains a lot in Juneau and when the skies clear in the evenings, the mornings are often foggy. When there is a clear night, I almost always wake up early looking for a fog-shrouded scene. This image is taken from Mountainside Estates overlooking the airport lights, the Chilkat Mountains and the setting moon at sunrise. This image illustrates the month of November in my 2008 Juneau Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, ...

Another year and another image from Auke Lake. Almost every year in the Juneau calendar, I feature an image from Auke Lake. After nineteen years of Juneau calendars, it still amazes that I can still find new and consistently beautiful images of this small treasure just eight miles down the road from downtown Juneau. This image illustrates the month of October in my 2008 Juneau Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 20-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor (polarized), Film 35mm Velvia slide film.-Mark Kelley

Killer whales cruise the by a small fishing boat anchored North Island with the Chilkat Mountains as a backdrop. This image illustrates the month of July in my 2008 Juneau Alaska Calendar and is the back cover image on my book on whales, Alaskas Watchable Whales: Humpback and Killer Whales. Camera: Nikon F/5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor polarized, Film: 35mm Velvia slide film.-Mark Kelley
