Starr Hill, Juneau, Alaska – Print #P156 – Image 2599

Seventeen inches of snow fell in the first four days of January 2009 in Juneau after a December that accumulated over 32 inches of snow (12 inches above average) and had an average temperature of 23 degrees (6 degrees colder than the normal December). This photo was shot at sunrise in January between 9:30am and 10am. As a photographer I cherish the rare day in Juneau that clears the day after a fresh snow dump. Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2597

Clear weather, smooth ice and huge icebergs are magnets for the Sunday strolling crowd. I shot this photo from the front doors of Mendenhall Glacier visitor center. It was such a fabulous day that my wife and I counted over 150 cars parked in the two parking lots and the road leading to the visitor center. What interests me in this image is the color of the glacier. It really is this color. The summer glacier is never as rich in color as the winter glacier ice and I don’t understand ...

Juneau from Douglas Island, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2596

I had planned to shoot a Christmas card of Juneau at first light with a fully lit Christmas tree in the foreground. Months before this shoot, I hauled a Christmas tree, lights, generator and a tree stand up the mountain. I set up the tree, decorated it and strung about 100 feet of power chord. I left and waited for a fresh snow followed by a clear morning. It took a couple of months for the perfect convergence. When it finally happened in late February, I started skiing up to my spot ...

Amalga Harbor, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2595

Amalga Harbor is a little bite along the Juneau shoreline about 30 miles from downtown Juneau. I was looking for a fresh snow shot in the early morning just after a big dump the day before. I always start at Amalga, and this is the first time I got it close to right. The area is wind sheltered and the snow piles up in these great pillows. Most of the coastal areas around Juneau are wind swept with really flat snow. The early morning sea smoke on the left side is a bonus. This image ...

Downtown, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2594

This is a December evening shot of downtown Juneau’s evening lights shot from Douglas Island next to the Douglas Breeze-in. When shooting evening shots I always try to time the shoot so there still is a hint of light in the sky so the mountain tops separate from the sky. The snow helps with this separation. I never wait until the dark/black of deep night. I like to time it so there might be a hint of magenta on the snow from the setting sun. This image illustrates the month of January in ...
