The cruise ship season officially ended September 24 with the last ship, Century, leaving town at 8:30pm. The counterpoint to last week's photo is this photo of the lone person checking out the glacier from photo point. Even on the most busy days there are times during the day that the walkways around the glacier visitors center can almost be deserted even on a 3,000 to 4,000 visitor day. The tourists visiting the glacier come in waves and most of them are back at the ship for dinner by ...

The Mendenhall Glacier on a multi-cruise ship day is a very busy place. Somewhere between 40 to 50% of all cruise ship passengers coming to Alaska go to the Mendenhall Glacier making the glacier the most visited natural wonder in Alaska. Photo point is the place most visitors go to view the scene. For several years, I had been looking for a photo that shows the glacier visitation going over the top. This is the photo that I settled on. On a busy day some 3,000 to 4,000 visitors can mob the ...

Hammer Slough in Petersburg is the quintesstial Southeast Alaska waterfront. At low tide the slough goes dry, and at high tide the historic stilted buildings create a mirror reflection in the water as it creeps up and fills the slough. I had waited all day and into the early evening to shoot the reflection. I had everything perfect, and then I heard a skiff revving up. I was cursing my fate because this speedy little boat would ruin my reflection that I had waited all day for. I was ...

I was watching the late afternoon cloud pattern and thought it might make for a good sunset. I called my friends, Steve and Jan, and asked if I could cut down through their property and wait on the beach to see if anything would come of the evening light. Waiting about half an hour, the sunset started to rev up, and my friends thought I was clairvoyant. They don't just how many times I set up for a lovely sunset and went home with nothing. Just as the sunset started to peak, I noticed ...

My favorite spot in Alaska to photograph Southeast Alaska native totems is Totem Bight State Historical Park located about 10 miles outside the town of Ketchikan. It is the only Alaska State Park dedicated solely to Alaska's native heritage. In 1938, the US Forest Service tasked the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to salvage and reconstruct cedar totems from abandoned native villages in Southeast Alaska. Now, 14 poles plus a clan house now sit on a beautiful piece of waterfront ...

The cruise ship season in Southeast Alaska is winding down with the last cruise ship leaving town on September 24. This view of the Juneau waterfront is from Douglas Island and is one of the more popular places to photograph Juneau for both tourists and locals alike. The image illustrates the month of April in my 2012 Juneau Alaska Calendar. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting.
