Altona, Manitoba #3094

Altona, Manitoba #3094

I just returned from Altona, a little town in Manitoba with a population of about 4,100. I was there for a week at my printer, Friesens, overseeing the production of the 2020 calendars and four reprints of my books. In this photo I am standing at the end of a printing press inspecting a sheet of pages from my book, Alaska: A Photographic Excursion, with my pressman Vern. For 24 years I would travel to Seoul, Korea to oversee the printing of my various products. Five years ago I went on a ...

Cruise Alaska Magazine #3098

I was happy to see that Alaska Magazine selected this and two other images for their February 2019 Cruising Alaska issue. This image really defines cruising in Alaska. Wouldn’t you like to enjoy these amazing sights of Glacier Bay National Park, while a group of kayakers paddle by? Pick up a copy of this month’s issue of Alaska Magazine for this image and two other images from my collection. Thank you for visiting, enjoy. ©Mark Kelley

Cruise Alaska Magazine #3093

Last Monday evening Jan and I were enjoying a lovely dinner cruise in front of Lahaina, Maui when a rainbow broke through the sunset colored clouds, creating some real light magic. I was invited to Maui to be a speaker for Whale Trust Maui’s 14th annual four-day celebration of whales called “Whale Tales”. There were eleven presenters over the President’s Day weekend hosted at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. I was in good company with Flip Nicklin (photographer for over 20 National Geographic ...
Lupine, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #3092

Lupine, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska #3092

This photo is of lupine growing along the walking ramp that leads from the parking lot to the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center in Juneau, Alaska. January and February are typically very busy with deadlines as we get our publishing projects out to press. While looking for images for the reprint of the Mendenhall Glacier book, I found this gem that almost got away. It is a little bizarre to show you a shot that screams of summer in the middle of the cold Alaska winter, but I couldn’t resist ...
Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, Alaska #3091

Mendenhall Glacier and Lake, Juneau, Alaska #3091

In Juneau the last week of January was unusually warm and wet; rains washed most of the snow away at sea level, and covered the ice on the Mendenhall Lake with a thin pool of water. On Friday the skies cleared and the temperature nosedived into the low teens. The water that had pooled up on the lake’s frozen surface turned into flawlessly smooth ice, which made for some of the best outdoor skating we have ever had. Hundreds of Juneauites spent the weekend skating, walking, sledding, biking ...
Alaska Conservation Foundation #3090

Alaska Conservation Foundation #3090

One of the most stunning views in all of Alaska is the sunrise over Denali, the Alaska Range, and Wonder Lake in Denali National Park. Spending a sunny morning walking around the northern end of the lake is the closest thing to heaven I know. I am happy the Alaska Conservation Foundation was able to use this image in their latest fundraising efforts. You may recognize this image as it is featured on the cover of, and as the September image in the current Mark Kelley Alaska calendar. ...
