I just returned from Altona, a little town in Manitoba with a population of about 4,100. I was there for a week at my printer, Friesens, overseeing the production of the 2020 calendars and four reprints of my books. Last Monday evening Jan and I were enjoying a lovely dinner cruise in front of Lahaina, Maui when a rainbow broke through the sunset colored clouds, creating some real light magic. This photo is of lupine growing along the walking ramp that leads from the parking lot to the Mendenhall Glacier visitor center in Juneau, Alaska. January and February are typically very busy with deadlines as we get our publishing projects out to press. In Juneau the last week of January was unusually warm and wet; rains washed most of the snow away at sea level, and covered the ice on the Mendenhall Lake with a thin pool of water. On Friday the skies cleared and the temperature nosedived into the low teens. The water that had pooled up on the lake’s frozen surface turned into flawlessly smooth ice, which made for some of the best outdoor skating we have ever had. One of the most stunning views in all of Alaska is the sunrise over Denali, the Alaska Range, and Wonder Lake in Denali National Park. Spending a sunny morning walking around the northern end of the lake is the closest thing to heaven I know. I am happy the Alaska Conservation Foundation was able to use this image in their latest fundraising efforts.
