I miss the northern lights. I used to be able to photograph the nothern lights at least a couple times each fall/winter/spring season. But, the last time I saw the northern lights was over a year ago in March. During that display, I took this photo of them over downtown Juneau. Basically, Juneauites have gone a year without seeing the northern lights. The scientists tell us the lights are in some sort of 10 to 13 year cycle and we are at the bottom of the cycle and should not expect ...

You probably think this is a continuation of the winter photos made so easy by Juneaus snowy winter. Actually I shot this dog mushing photo on the Mendenhall Glacier in the summer. There is a great shore excursion available in Juneau where the cruise ship passengers or for that matter independent travelers get a helicopter tour of the ice field, land on the glacier and then go dog mushing. How cool is that? Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Nikon F5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, ...

Spring skiing is the best. The cross-country trails above sea level are fantastic through April. The next couple weeks of images are all going to be cropped long and thin. I had a client that requested this unusual crop, and the request made me look at my images in a different way. I actually enjoyed finding images to fit this crop. The crop sort of matches my body type
long and thin. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Nikon F5, Lens: 20-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor, exposure setting unknown, ...

Skiing is still great at Eaglecrest, Juneaus local ski area. We still have over 150 inches on top and another 85 inches of all-natural snow at the base. This winter has been stunning with nothing but dumps of snow or dumps of sunshine. So far this year has been one of the prettiest winters that I can remember, and actually is the third great winter in a row if you love snow like I do. This image shows off my most favorite view of the area. It is on the West Ridge hike. The view ...

Two Sitka black-tailed deer walk the tide line searching for food. Deer are mostly considered forest animals, but in the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge deer spend their time searching the tide lines for food while finding safety inside the forested islands dotting this tidal state game refuge. I got lucky on this shot. I was out in the refuge by first light just checking locations out and looking for a good fireweed image. All of the sudden, two deer come out of one forested ...

Grotto Island is on the outer edge of the Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska. This island is a bird rookery and sealion haul-out. I was on an assignment for a book on Alaska and was exploring Kenai Fjords National Park on a commercial day-boat tour out of Seward, Alaska. I had never been in the area before and came upon this amazing rock island. I was unprepared for what I was seeing and let the motor drive fly. Only one frame worked where I could see the sea lions on the flat rock ...
