Sitka, Alaska has one of the most beautiful seaside settings of any town in the state. The evening town lights and the little islands of Sitka Sound disappearing off into the darkening night enhance the beauty of this magical place. This same location shot during the day looks fine but does not resonate with the warmth and mystery found in this image. This photo illustrates the month of November in the 2016 Alaska Calendar. Thank you for visiting - Camera: Nikon D800, Lens: Nikkor 24-120mm ...

An important element in a successful photo is design. I like to give the two-dimensional presentation of a printed image a three dimensional feel when possible. The effect is called layering. This image has a natural layering as the mountain ridges pile up on each other with the help of the early morning fog, giving separation between the ridges. In addition, the water is not monochromatic but layered instead with repetitive lines of silver and blue. All this layering upon layering makes ...

If someone told me they only had one day to visit Alaska, I would send them to Tracy Arm. I have been living in Juneau for over 35 years and have gone to Tracy Arm so many times I have lost count. In Tracy Arm you are almost guaranteed to see harbor seals, glaciers, and incredibly steep and narrow fjords rising several thousand feet high. More than likely you will see glaciers calving and incredibly blue icebergs, some as large as the boat you will be traveling in, will be floating by. ...

I gave up my film cameras and switched to digital cameras in 2007 and I guess I was a late adopter. All of my professional photographer friends had changed over years before I jumped in. Every once in a while I find an image in my film library that seems to meet the sharpness that is standard in digital photography. This photo of a full-curl Dall sheep ram is just such an image. I really love this wildlife portrait and I have fond memories of the four plus hours spent with this animal and ...

This photo is all about fall colors. I shot this image of a cow moose in the lush fall colors of the tundra in Denali National Park. I was there in fall of 2014 leading a photo workshop for Camp Denali, the only lodge that has a 24-7 view of the Denali (formerly known as Mt. McKinley). I have been invited back in 2016 to lead two workshops, August 26-28 and August 29-September 1, 2016. I look forward to seeing you there. This photo illustrates the month of September in 2016 Alaska ...

The Juneau 2015 summer tourist season comes to an end this Thursday, September 24th, with the final arrival of the Holland America ship the Oosterdam. The Mendenhall Glacier is Juneau’s number one tourist attraction, and one of the most visited spots at the glacier is Nugget Falls. I love it photographically when I can get what I call a “twofer”, an image containing two or more great subjects within one photo. Also, I like to layer my photos with two or more subjects of interest, which ...
