July 2007 Cover of Alaska Airlines Magazine – Image 2526

Alaska Airlines Magazine featured my photo of the brown bear on the cover along with 15 of my wildlife images covering seven pages inside in the magazine. I shot the brown bear photo in Glacier Bay at Blue Moose Cove while working on my book on Glacier Bay National Park. I was in a kayak with my friend Brien. We were following the bear along the shoreline when he decided to come straight at us. He us above us slightly, and we were at low tide. The ground level view gives this photo a ...

Sea otters, Sitka Sound, Alaska – Image 2525

My favorite place to photograph sea otters is in Sitka. Allen Marine Tours has a Sitka Sound tour that looks for sea otters. Not all trips get views like this, but every once in a while one gets lucky. There were 30 to 40 animals in this group. This experience made me think of Sitka Sound as the Serengeti Plain for sea otters. This image illustrates page 47 in my new book on Alaska called Alaska: A Photographic Excursion and is also the photo for the month of March in my 2008 Southeast ...

Bald eagles, Sitka, Alaska – Image 2524

Everyone loves taking photos of soaring eagles, and I am no different. I have way too many of these images and still can not stop taking them. Every once is awhile one image goes beyond the norm. This photo works for me because I see very few photos of eagles soaring in groups. It rarely happens. The interplay between the three eagles’ wings makes this image work for me. This image illustrates page 46 in my new book on Alaska called Alaska: A Photographic Excursion and is also the ...

Icy Falls, Tracy Arm, Alaska – Image 2523

Icy falls is one of the too-many-to-count waterfalls cascading down the 2,000 foot high fiord walls of Tracy Arm. This falls is a favorite among boaters. The deep water in front of the falls allows boats to get so close that they can dip their bows in the falls. This image illustrates page 59 in my new book on Alaska called Alaska: A Photographic Excursion and is also the photo for the month of November in my 2008 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F/5, 20-35mm f/2.8 polarized, ...

Hubbard Glacier, Wrangell-St Elias National Park, Alaska – Image 2522

The Hubbard Glacier just north of Yakutat starts in Canada and winds its way down to Disenchantment Bay just outside Yakutat, Alaska. This glacier travels over 90 miles from its source in the Yukon Territory and qualifies as the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska. It massive ice face stretches for over six miles. It is one of the few glaciers in Alaska that is still advancing. This image illustrates page 104 in my new book on Alaska called Alaska: A Photographic Excursion and is also ...

Margerie Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2521

Margerie Glacier calves a massive iceberg from its face. Glaciers are constantly moving forward. This forward motion forces large chucks of ice to fall off the front or face of the glacier in what is known as glacier calving. I shot this photo while on a small boat cruise traveling through Southeast Alaska. This image illustrates page 94 in my new book on Alaska called Alaska: A Photographic Excursion and is also the photo for the month of February in my 2008 Southeast Alaska Calendar. ...
