I have been after this shot for years and years and years. The necessary ingredients are lots of snow on the Towers to reflect the morning light; and a plane leaving the Juneau Airport timed to hit the gap between the towers at sunrise during the months of December and January. During these months the sun rises due south giving the south facing slopes of the Towers maximum morning light. Shooting from the North Douglas False Outer Point parking lot about 15 miles from the Towers, the huge ...

When I look for a cover for my calendars, I am looking for an image that shows the essence of Alaska. Rule one is the image has to have great light. Next the image has to show the essential elements that make Alaska special to me and the world: wilderness, wildlife, mountains and glaciers. One or two of these concepts/elements has to be involved in the image to make the cover selects. It is rare that one image will have more than two of essential elements. I love this image because it has ...

I got up four mornings in a row at 5am to get this photo. This setting moon was shot about 35 miles out the road (an hour drive from my home). I wanted the moon setting over the mountains right at first light. The first three mornings my timing was off, and unbelievably there was a fourth clear day in a row in April. On the fourth morning, I had the timing figured out. I got the photo that I previsualized. This image illustrates the month of January in my 2010 Southeast Alaska ...

I shot this photo from an Allen Marine catamaran piloted by my friend, Jim Collins. Jim is a wildlife junkie and loves driving boats. Certain captains know how to position a boat for the best photo, and Jim has this ability better than anyone else I know. It is like he is looking through my camera and lens. I credit Jim for getting me this photo of this small family group of killer whales swimming past our stopped boat. This image illustrates the month of February in my 2010 Southeast ...

Reflection pond is one of the most photographic spots in Denali. It is about 80 miles back along the park road, past the Wonder Lake Campground, about half way down Wonder Lake and just off the road. It is the most accessible pond that goes mirror calm mostly in the morning and evening. I shot this photo in the evening light in early August. Expect company on the days with the great light. This image illustrates the Page 136 in my book, "Alaska: A Photographic Excursion". Enjoy the ...

When I decided to do my book on Alaska, I knew I wanted Denali on the cover because it is the iconic image of the state. I set out to get this image, and I booked a cabin at Camp Denali that has a 24-7 view of the mountain for the last week in August. The first four days that I was in camp, it just rained, poured and then snowed. I did not even bring my cameras out of the cabin. On the fifth day, I woke up at 5am to a crystal clear morning. I hopped on a bike with my camera equipment and ...
