Owl, Sitka Raptor Center – Image 2416

This photo is of one of the resident owls in the Sitka Raptor Center. My Southeast Calendar reflects on life in this corner of the world. By publishing this photo, I can highlight the good work of the Sitka Raptor Center plus get a beautiful photo for the calendar. This photo illustrates the month of March in my 2006 Southeast Alaska Calendar. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 500mm f/4 Nikkor, Film: 35mm Velvia (35mm color slide film).-Mark Kelley

Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glaciers Book Cover – Image 2415

I first photographed Tracy Arm in 1980 and immediately fell in love with the place. Over the past 25 years, I have probably made two dozen trips to the area. Tracy Arm has been Juneau's secret backyard mini-Glacier Bay that only locals, their family and friends knew about. Now, the wilderness area has become a major tourist attraction in Southeast Alaska. The publication of this book this April marks my 8th photo book. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 20-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor (polarized) and split ...

Unalaska, Alaska – Image 2414

Built in 1825 on Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands, the Holy Ascension of Our Lord Catheral is the oldest Russian Orthodox cruciform-style church in North America. The largest private collection of Russian artifacts, religious icons and art pieces in Alaska can be found here. The fireweed is being whipped around by the Aluetian Island's famous wind. Paintbrush, Alaska – Image 2413

I photographed this field of paintbrush in 1980 along the Alsek River in Glacier Bay National Park. In all my years of traveling in the wilderness since then, I have not found a field to rival this spot. I keep hoping to get back this spot and spend several days during the peak of the season. But, it is costly and really hard to access. One day I will go. Camera: Olympus OM-1, Lens: 135mm f/2.8, Film: 35mm Kodachrome (35mm color slide film).Copyright Mark Kelley

The Arctic lupine is a very common plant found throughout the area this time of the year and is one of the first flowers of the spring/summer season. Cordova, Alaska – Image 2411

Cordova is a fishing port on the coast of Prince William Sound accessible only by plane or boat. The community has about 2,600 permanent residents, but doubles its population during the summer with commercial fisherman and cannery workers. I shot this photo for a book published on the Alaska Ferry System that goes out to Cordova and beyond. Camera: Nikon F4, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, Film:35mm Velvia (35mm color slide film).-Mark Kelley
