Ice Cave, Castner Glacier, Delta Junction, Alaska #3444

Ice Cave, Castner Glacier, Delta Junction, Alaska #3444

Living in Juneau, Alaska, I have had many opportunities to explore the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau’s backyard glacier. As the Mendenhall retreated, its easily accessible ice caves disappeared. I had heard of the ice caves near Delta Junction and went to check them out on a mid-March shoot. The small entrance to the Castner Glacier opened up into a huge ice room dwarfing anything I had ever seen. Temperatures hovered around minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. All the warm moist ...
Moon Set, Juneau, Alaska #3443

Moon Set, Juneau, Alaska #3443

February’s full moon is known as the “snow moon” due to that month’s typically heavy snowfalls. According to the National Weather Service, on average February is the United States’ snowiest month.  This “snow moon” sets over the Chilkat Mountains, Shelter Island and Lena Point and was shot in February 2021. I posted this image back then and due to everyone’s great responses decided it had to be a calendar shot. This image illustrates the month of November in the 2023 Juneau Calendar and is ...
Black Wolf, Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska #3442

Black Wolf, Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska #3442

An image of the wolf who captured our hearts, Romeo. A special moment to remind us of how lucky we are to live with a glacier and wildlife in our very own backyard. This image illustrates the month of February in the 2023 Alaska Calendar. Purchase your favorite calendar in local Juneau stores or at markkelley.com. I will be at the Public Market at Centennial through tomorrow. Come by to say hello and purchase your signed calendars. Thank you for visiting and for the gift of your time. ...
Harbor Seals, Tracy Arm #4041

Harbor Seals, Tracy Arm #4041

A mother harbor seal checks in with her pup. Harbor seals birth their pups in May and June and South Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm provides the perfect maternity ward. There are plenty of icebergs to haul out on for giving birth and the thick pack ice gives the seals protection from their main predator, the killer whale. The South Sawyer Glacier basin in one of the top three seal pupping locations in Alaska’s Inside Passage and is only an 8–10-hour roundtrip boat ride from Juneau’s downtown ...
Bald Eagles, Juneau, Alaska #3440

Bald Eagles, Juneau, Alaska #3440

A pile of bald eagles seek shelter from a raging storm in a large stand of Sitka spruce trees across the road from Western Auto in the Lemon Creek area of Juneau. For over 40 years I have been watching the eagles use these trees. As Lemon Creek experienced growing commercial development, I feared some entity would buy this area and cut the trees down. The good news is that in 2019 the Southeast Alaska Land Trust (SEAL Trust), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, bought the eagles’ storm ...
Aurora Borealis, Juneau, Alaska #3439

Aurora Borealis, Juneau, Alaska #3439

It was an amazing night of northern lights storming over Auke Lake, Mt. McGinnis, and the Coast Mountains. Unlike the high arctic which is regularly awash in the aurora, many outsiders seem surprised to know that Juneau gets northern lights. I usually go out five to ten times a year hoping the shoot the lights here, and I actually end up with maybe one or two nights of really active lights. Even though my shooting percentage is low, a night under the aurora is always a cherished and ...
