The northern boundary of Glacier Bay National Park is the Alsek River. It separates Canada from the USA. Most people visit the northern edge of the park by rafting this river. Along the Alsek River is a glacier the rafters refer to as the "Walker Glacier". Almost every raft group gets out of their boats and takes a hike on this glacier hence "Walker Glacier". I do not know what its real name is and have never found it. Anyways, we were camped at the base of the glacier after a day of ...

One of my favorite views of the Fairweather Range in Glacier Bay National Park is from Icy Strait. This photo was actually taken from my dear friends, Paul and Tammi's front deck. They own the Gull Cove Lodge in Gull Cove at the top of Idaho Inlet (right off Icy Strait). They have to be the luckiest people in the world to have this view. Mt. Fairweather is the park's most famous peak with a standing height of 15,320 feet. It taller than any other mountain in the lower 48, but in Alaska it ...

I am re-running a photo that appears in my 2011 Juneau Alaska Calendar of bubble-net feeding whales. In December, I got good news that it received an honorable mention in the 2010 National Wildlife Magazine's Photo Contest. I entered it in the category called "Connecting People with Nature,Professional". There were over 50,000 images entered, and the image should be appearing on their website some time in the not so distant future. Enjoy the photo and thanks for visiting. Once again as a ...

I grew up as a working newspaper photojournalist for the first 14 years ofmy professional life and love taking photos of people. But, my passions arewildlife and wilderness. Right now there is more demand for mywilderness/wildlife photos than for my people images. But when I get a goodportrait I am going to feature it. This is Sasha and she lives in themiddle of "nowhere" Oregon. She been a family friend forever, and wevisited her with her parents, Scott and Paula, in October 2010. At ...

Until this day, I had never seen the ice on the Mendenhall Lake so smooth that it would reflect the glacier so clearly. What happened is that a very heavy January rain of about 10 inches fell in two days and washed all of the snow away. After the snow was melted the water just pooled up on the lake ice. As soon as it stopped raining, it turned cold (really cold) and clear almost overnight, setting up this amazing clear and reflective ice. I was out photographing this scene when my ...

It has been dumping snow on Juneau as I write this note. I again admit I love snow and snow love is what this photo is all about. Jan, my wife, snowshoes off the top of Mt. Troy. We like going to Mt. Troy for the physical exercise of climbing a mountain in snowshoes but also because the Troy area is a sun sink. In Alaska, the sun is low in the sky and many places do not get sun all day. With the winter light being short, we hunt out places that get plenty of winter sun. Mt. Troy gets ...
