November to mid-December is the time of year, people head to Haines to photograph the annual migration of eagles to Haines. Every year thousands of bald eagles descend on Haines. As the rest of Alaska freezes up the eagles move south looking for open water and feed. The Chilkat River has a late salmon run. I try to photograph this wildlife happening as often as I can. The days are short, and the shooting light is good for only about 4 to 5 hours. I spend the rest of the time looking ...

I photograph whales as often as I can. Jim Collins from Allen Marine is my one of my favorite guys to go whale watching with. We are both wildlife junkies. I love to come back with wonderful photos, but the majority of the trips do not produce anything, and we really dont care. Being on the water and on the quest is enough. But, this trip worked really well. To get the whales to align with the glacier in the background sets the scene for illustrating the fact that this pair of killer ...

A lot of photography is luck and being in the right place at the right time. This is a photo I could never plan. I thank my lucky stars for aligning and making it happen. I have shot or driven by Wonder Lake probably more than 100 times and only once did I see a moose in the lake and it happened on a day Denali was showing. Most of the days that I have been around Wonder Lake, Denali is not showing. The old adage works for me, "The harder I work, the luckier I get." This season I ...

Sitka and the surrounding Sitka Sound are one of the prettiest spots in Alaska. In Southeast Alaska, Sitka is the only town that sits on the outside coast facing the Gulf of Alaska. The sound contains literally hundreds of little islands all back dropped by 3,000 to 5,000 foot mountains. I shot this photo from Castle Hill in Sitka looking across the Sound. The lighthouse in the photo is a replica that was built on its own island as a bed and breakfast. This season I started a line of ...

I photographed this cow moose from my rolled down window along the road in Denali National Park. I had taken the family to the park for their first time. There are not many moose in the Juneau area so my boys were fascinated by how large this moose was. This moose eventually crossed right in front of our mini-van and the top of its back lined up with the top of our windshield. This season I started a line of postcards with this image being one in a line of 42 different images. Camera: ...

I wanted to show winter in Glacier Bay for my book on the park. My requirements for this photo were a high tide in the morning, a fresh snowfall the night before and a morning with sunshine. I waited three years for these factors to align. Then I hired a plane out of Juneau and did the shoot. This image illustrates the month of November in the 2007 Southeast Alaska calendar.
