I love this photo because it doesn't look like an image one would find in Alaska. The image looks like it should have been taken in the swamps of the Everglades. I actually shot this photo of the great blue heron in Steep Creek just a little over a mile from the face of the Mendenhall Glacier. The Mendenhall Glacier is over 13 miles long and in some places is over a mile wide. Lakes and streams exist on top of this huge ice mass. Because the water on top of the ice is always eroding the ice it creates holes and cracks causing the streams to always change course, and lakes drain and form new lakes all summer long. I shot this same scene about 12 years ago, but there was only one stock of fireweed. The images were acceptable, but never reached calendar/portfolio level.
