Bald Eagle, Southeast Alaska – Image 2374

Bald Eagle, Southeast Alaska – Image 2374

Photographing eagles is always fun and difficult. The shoot is made aloteasier with auto-focusing. I used to get one or two sharp images with myold manual focus. With auto-focusing my success ratio for producing sharpimages is probably around 75%. I love the technolgy. This photoillustrates the month of March in my 2005 Juneau Calendar. False Outer Point, Southeast Alaska – Image 2373

The Juneau salmon derby starts this weekend. I shot this photo in May several years ago at False Outer Point during the height of the spring king salmon season. I used a 300mm lens to accentuate the huge sun reflection. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 300mm f/4 Nikkor, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia (35mm color slide film).-Mark Kelley

Dwarf Fireweed, Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Southeast Alaska – Image 2372

We have had an extremely dry, sunny and hot summer. The fireweed which isusually peeking this week has already gone to seed two weeks ago. I shotthis photo of the dwarf fireweed at the swimming pond by the MendenhallGlacier. This pond is closed off from the larger Mendenhall Lake and warmsto a very comfortable swimming temperature. This photo illustrates themonth of August in my Juneau 2005 Calendar. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 20-35mmf/2.8 Nikkor, polarized, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia (35mm ...

Porcupine, Southeast Alaska – Image 2371

What I like about this photo is that it brings a smile to the viewer's face.It is a porcupine with a bad hair day. I climbed another tree to get thisangle and use the tree branches as my brace for my long telephoto lens. Thisphoto illustrates the month of July in my 2005 Juneau Calendar. Camera:Nikon F5, Lens: 500mm f/4 Nikkor, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia (35mm color slidefilm).-Mark Kelley
Chilkoot River Fly Fishing, Haines, Southeast Alaska – Image 2370

Chilkoot River Fly Fishing, Haines, Southeast Alaska – Image 2370

The huge boulders pok-a-dotting the Chilkoot River in Haines makes for greatvantage points to shoot fishermen in a very popular fishing river. So oftenshooting from ground level, the fisherman's upper body or head gets lost inthe river bank or trees. The higher vantage point allows me to separate thefisherman out from the distracting background and place him clearly in theriver. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 20-35mm f/2.8 Nikkor, polarized, Film: 35mmFuji Velvia (35mm color slide film).-Mark Kelley

Float Plane over Misty Fiords, Ketchikan, Southeast Alaska – Image 2369

I like this photo because it shows a classic means of transportation aroundSoutheast ALaska, the float plane, backdropped against the classic SoutheastAlaska coastal environment of small coves and spruce forest to the ocean'sedge. I shot this photo from a chase plane through an open window. Camera:Nikon F5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, polarized, Film: 35mm Fuji Velvia(35mm color slide film).-Mark Kelley
