When I leave the office for a photo shoot, I usually have a subject in mind. I almost never go out without a preconceived image in my head, as I don’t like to wander around aimlessly. Sometime this directed approach provides for unexpected surprises, and this is exactly what happed during a recent foggy day in Juneau. I headed out to Sandy Beach, thinking I would shoot the historic pump house coming in and out of the fog. As I walked around my intended target, I found something much more ...

Last week I spent seven days in a cabin in Wiseman along the Dalton Highway (the Haul Road) in the Arctic. My friend and fellow photographer, Murray Cohen planned this trip a while back in order to shoot the northern lights up north. The trip had all the great ingredients for a wonderful photo: the Brooks Range as a backdrop, full moon nights, dark skies clear of light pollution, and great potential for northern lights viewing. Our recipe just had to work. And then add the surprise ...

Another special moment from last summer; you may remember this post from when I returned from Glacier Bay. I entered this and three other images in the Memorial Maria Luisa Photo contest in Spain. All four images were selected for Honorable Mentions. This image is also the cover of the 2017 Alaska calendar. The MML photo contest is Spain’s most prestigious nature/wildlife photo contest and out of 1772 photographers from 79 countries just six Americans made the winners’ list. The overall ...

What a special moment to experience: pink clouds, Denali, and the Alaska Range casting a mirror image on Wonder Lake. I shot this classic view last August. I was that lucky guy that got to spend a week in Denali National Park traveling the road with a photographer’s special use permit, in my own car and on my own time schedule. This image is the cover of the newly released second edition of Alaska: A Photographic Excursion. I entered Denali Dream and three other images in the Memorial ...
The Memorial Maria Luisa Photo Contest is an International Mountain, Nature, and Adventure Photo Contest. Winners in the 26 MML were selected from 16,000 entries by 1772 photographers from 79 countries. Just six Americans made the winners’ list and I am honored to be the only American with four Honorable Mentions. My entry Denali Dream received an honorable mention and is also the book cover of the newly released second edition of the Alaskan bestseller Alaska: A Photographic Excursion. ...

The last three days in Juneau have been just drop-dead gorgeous. It is these days that thrill me to be living here. Yesterday I was shooting the sun setting over the Chilkat Mountains at Eagle Beach when a flock of Canada geese flew by. They turned towards me just in time to place the silhouette of their classic v-flying wedge formation in my upper frame.
