A BIG THANK YOU #3366

A BIG THANK YOU #3366

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the City & Borough of Juneau and all Juneauites. We are all deeply affected by COVID-19, as are our local businesses. My business activity came to a halt this year, but thanks to a grant from the city I can keep my doors open. I am also thankful for all of you who purchase my calendars every year. I could not do what I do without the support of my local town and all Mark Kelley friends, wherever you are, thank you! Print P223
Boy Scout Beach, Eagle River, Juneau, Alaska #3365

Boy Scout Beach, Eagle River, Juneau, Alaska #3365

One of my favorite trees in Juneau, Alaska, is this cottonwood starkly standing on Crow Point at Boy Scout Beach. This tree is the lone deciduous sentinel in a sea of a bazillion evergreens. The trail out to Crow Point follows along a beautiful sandy beach and is one of my favorite hikes in Juneau. Every time I come upon this tree, I wonder to myself: “how in the heck did this tree get here and grow so large without any supporting family or neighbors.” It is a testament to its strength and ...

Brown Bear, Raven, Pack Creek, Admiralty Island, AK #3365:

Bears and birds have a symbiotic relationship at Pack Creek on Admiralty Island. The brown bears catch the spawning salmon, drag the fish to shore to eat, and leave the scraps for the birds, mostly ravens and gulls. As the bears charge up and down the creek to catch their salmon they also stir up the creek bed, releasing the salmon eggs that gulls in particular love to feed on. The birds and bears mostly ignore each other but once in a while there is an interspecies connection. This bear ...
Humpback Whales, Icy Strait, Alaska #3364

Humpback Whales, Icy Strait, Alaska #3364

The Fairweather Mountains in Glacier Bay National Park create a perfect Alaska backdrop for a group of approximately nine humpback whales swimming along the surface after completing a bubble-net feeding off Point Adolphus in Icy Strait. Bubble-net feeding is a particular whale behavior only associated with humpbacks and mostly occurring only in Southeast Alaska waters. During this cooperative feeding behavior, humpbacks locate and then circle schools of small bait fish, like herring, while ...
Humpback Whale Tail, Juneau, Alaska #3363

Humpback Whale Tail, Juneau, Alaska #3363

Last Thursday, on October 1, the skies cleared and the ocean calmed, a rare combination in this part of the world famous for fall storms that soak us. I took advantage of the moment and hopped on a large open skiff with my friends, Paul and Rick, to look for humpback whales. There was plenty of room for self-distancing in the fresh air. We started looking for humpback whales. This time of year, most humpback whales in Alaska have started their annual migration to Hawaii, but there are ...
Alaska, Dog Mushing, Juneau Icefield #3362

Alaska, Dog Mushing, Juneau Icefield #3362

In the 1880’s Mark Twain was so awed by his first site of a glacier that he wrote, “A man who keeps company with glaciers comes to feel tolerably insignificant by and by.” In this image I was trying to visibly illustrate his comment depicting the insignificance of humans in the vastness of this other-worldly environment. I would like to thank Northstar Trekking for the helicopter ride to their dog camp on the upper reaches of the Taku Glacier in the Juneau Icefield during the summer of ...
