The town of Sitka in Southeast Alaska has one of the most stunning backdrop of mountains of any town I know of in Alaska. I was there just after it had snowed over a foot and then the weather cleared. I was indoors all day shooting a magazine assignment of a weaver, and it was just driving me nuts knowing how gorgeous it was outside. I had to fly back home to Juneau that evening and on my way to the airport I stopped to take this photo. The secret to shooting night photos is to shoot the ...

This is my friend, Dave Haas, horsing around in front of the face of the Mendenhall Glacier. I was on an assigned shoot for Bradley-Reid, the State of Alaskas advertising agency, to promote winter tourism. I wanted to show the scale of the glacier and just how accessible it is. In the winter it is about a half hour walk across the frozen lake to the front of the glacier from the visitor centers parking lot. The glacier ice is much bluer (prettier) in the winter than in the summer, and ...

I love living in a town were the local ski area, Eaglecrest, is only 12 miles from my home. The mountain features 640 acres of skiable terrain accessed by four chairlifts featuring 1,500 feet of vertical drop. It also helps to have two sons who are really good skiers, love to perform for the camera, and still are willing to ski with their old man. This photo is of Owen ripping up a piece of virgin powder surrounded by ice-encased spruce trees. The lesson of this photo is to have talented ...

I shot the full moon setting over the Chilkat Mountains from around 33-miles out the road on the Juneau road system. The wind was blowing so hard down Lynn Canal, there was wind smoke on top of the white capped waves. The trick in photographing a full moon is to not use too long of an exposure. The photographer has to balance the ISO, the shutter speed, and aperture to allow for enough exposure of the overall scene while freezing the moons motion. The image illustrates the month of ...

Just this past week the Mendenhall Lake finally froze over with a thin layer of skim ice. In my 34 years of photographing the Mendenhall Glacier, I have never seen the water right in front of the glacier go mirror calm. I have many images of the mirror calm lake from the west side but never before from the east side. The Mendenhall is about 13 miles and generates a little micro climate. There is almost always a slight, almost imperceivable breeze coming off the glacier that is strong ...

Juneau, AlaskaA classic view from Douglas Island is of the abandoned pump house at Sandy Beach from the Treadwell Mine in the late 1800's. I assigned myself to shoot a new image of this iconic spot every year, and hopefully would publish the new image in the following years calendar. My self-assignment started three years ago, yet I have only been able to come up with two calendar images since I started. Presently, I am editing the images for the 2015 calendar, and the latest pump house ...
