For those of you who do not know, Alaska has some great surfing. The most popular spot in Alaska are the beaches of Yakutat. Yakutat is a small town with a population of 650 that also has a great surf shop named Icy Waves. There are miles and miles and miles of unbroken and unpopulated beaches featuring breaking waves from the open ocean of the Gulf of Alaska. My sons are just starting their surfing lifestyles so my wife and I joined them on the beaches for a surf campout. We were there ...

With its tongue still sticking out, a Rufous Hummingbird finishes its feeding at my friends' (Joe and Karey) bird feeder. Joe and Karey own a lodge at Crab Cove on Admiralty. I went there to help Joe open the lodge and hopefully photograph bears. I wanted to test my new Wimberley tripod head on top of my new Gitzo tripod using my 500mm lens. I had hoped to test the lens/tripod combination on bears, but the bears were missing. The hummingbird feeder was a perfect substitute test. A ...

Like the previous image #2670, this image was also accepted in the State of Alaska Museum's biennial juried photo show, "Alaska Positive". The original print will hang with the show for this summer at the Juneau museum and then will spend the rest of the year traveling to different museums around the state. I displayed a version of this photo from my January 2010 Juneau Calendar in a previous posting on 12-2-2009...Image #2646. I like this redone image better because of the new crop. ...

Back to Alaska. If you are flying on Alaska Airlines during May, you will see this image of my son, Gabe, exploring the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier. It was picked as one of the 10 finalists (out of 1,500 images) for the magazine's yearly photo contest. Besides the Alaska Airlines photo contest, this image was just accepted in the State of Alaska Museum's biennial juried photo show. The original print will hang with the show for this summer at the Juneau museum and then will ...

My website usually only shows images of Alaska. But for next couple of months, I plan to show images that I took last October while visiting South Africa and Namibia. Once you are out on the road touring Kruger National Park, you are almost never allowed to leave the vehicle. The only exception is when you are crossing bridges over rivers. The park has pull off lanes on the bridges, and visitors are allowed to get out to stretch. As a photographer, there is great perspective of directly ...

My website usually only shows images of Alaska. But for next couple of months, I plan to show images that I took last October while visiting South Africa and Namibia. Vervet monkeys are inescapable fixtures in the rest camps in Kruger National Park. The monkeys can become very bothersome especially the ones fed by humans. I watched one monkey jump out of a tree, scoot across a picnic table in a flash and take a banana from the person's hand. Before the person could even swear, the monkey ...
