Harbor seal, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2105

A pregnant harbor seal on an iceberg lifts its head to watch us drift by in a zodiac. I was in Glacier Bay National Park with Joel Bennett many years ago on a special permit to film harbor seals. I shot this photo with an Olympus OM-1 with a 300mm manual focus lens on Kodachrome 64 film almost twenty years ago. The photo can be found in the Juneau 2002 Calendar, on a 5x7 note card and in my book, Juneau Portrait II.-Mark Kelley
Sawmill Creek waterfalls – Image 2103

Sawmill Creek waterfalls – Image 2103

A hiker peeks over the edge to check out the waterfall at Sawmill Creek about 40 miles north of Juneau. The only way to get to Sawmill Creek is to drive north out of Juneau to the end of the road and then boat another three miles or so to Berners Bay. This photo was published in Germany Geo Magazine for an article on Alaska and can be found in my book Juneau Portrait II. I shot this photo using a Nikon F-3 with a 24mm F/2.8 Nikor lens on Fuji 50 film.-Mark Kelley

Caribou crossing Tamayariak River, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge – Image 2104

The most recent issue of Time for Kids featured my photograph as the cover for the issue on the controversy surrounding oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I shot this photo on assignment for Outside Magazine. They used it horizontally as a double page. My photo agency, Alaska Stock, sold the image to Time. Also, the April issue of Alaska Magazine features an eight page layout of my Glacier Bay photos. If you want to see more covers, go to the black bar at the ...

South Sawyer Glacier, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror National Wilderness – Image 2102

Two house size chunks of ice cascade down the front of South Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness about 40 miles south of Juneau, Alaska. I was on a boat photographing mountain goats at the tideline when I heard the glacier cracking. I swung around with my 300mm and started shooting immediately. I was very thankful for the auto-focus and auto-exposure. All I had time to do was compose the image. The F4 gave me my correct exposure and focus. I shot this photo using a ...

Heli-skiing, Chilkat Mountains, Alaska – Image 2100

April is the month for helicopter skiing in the mountains surrounding Juneau. The photo is taken from the Chilkat Mountains looking across the Lynn Canal onto the mainland and Juneau. The Chilkat Mountains lie between Lynn Canal and Glacier Bay National Park. I shot this photo using a Nikon F-4 camera body with an 35-75mm F/2.8 zoom lens with a polarizing filter on Fuji Velvia film.-Mark Kelley
