Juneau, Alaska – Image 2846

The other great place to shoot winter sunsets in Juneau is along Fritz Cove Road on the southern shore of Auke Bay. The March and April sunsets happen on the northern edge of Auke Bay. This image shows Eric Lindegaard watching the view from his dock. This image is not digitally enhanced. The colors truly look like this and Eric is my witness. Sometimes nature's lightshows are just unbelievable. The image illustrates the month of December in my Juneau 2014 Calendar. Thanks for visiting. ...

Auke Bay, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2845

A friend of mine built a house on Auke Bay that has a commanding view of the sunset. He lets me shoot from his deck, and this spot is one of the hottest places for evening light, especially in the winter. The image illustrates the month of March in my Southeast Alaska, 2014 Calendar. Thanks for visiting. Camera body:D700, Lens:Nikkor 70-200mm, ISO 200, Digital Capture, tripod© Mark Kelley

Thunder Mountain, Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska – Image 2844

(Image# 2844 on 10-16-2013..October in my 2014 SE cal) One of my favorite camping spots in Juneau is up on top of Thunder Mountain. The views of the Mendenhall Glacier are just drop-dead beautiful. It is a three to four hour strenuous hike up from sea level to about the 3,000 foot level. There is a little pond up on top and if shot carefully it looks like a large lake. What makes this place so wonderful to shoot is the combination of glaciers, mountains, and water. The image illustrates ...

Harbor Seals, Endicott Arm, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, Alaska – Image 2843

Harbor seals hang out on an iceberg. Although there are seals in Tracy Arm-Fords Terror all summer long, the best time to see these animals is in May and June. The seals find protection from their main predator, the killer whale, in the thick ice that gathers around the face of the glaciers. It is here in the thick ice that the mother seals give birth to their pups. The moms nurture the pups until they are able to survive when they leave the relative safety of the pack ice sometime in late ...

Eastern Passage, Wrangell, Alaska – Image 2842

This image was taken onboard the "Delphinus" while on anchor. I was waiting to go to Anan Creek to photograph bears. The image is of Zoe Kipping and ran as a cover of Alaska Magazine in October 2012. I knew I liked the image but after the photo editor of Alaska Magazine, Michael Dinneen, picked it as a cover I thought it should go into my next calendar as well. I always appreciate a second set of eyes to review my work. I shot this image while conducting a photo workshop onboard the ...
Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2841

Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2841

The Mendenhall Glacier is a retreating glacier. The glacier has been in retreat since the mid-1700s and in the last 250 plus years has retreated about two and a half miles from its terminal moraine. As seen in these two mirror images, the glacier has retreated over 5,380 feet (more than a mile) and has thinned about 700 vertical feet in just the last 26 years. My friend Brien Daugherty (second from the left) is in both photos. He had brown hair in 1986 and white hair in 2012. The image ...
