A brown bear at Pack Creek on Admiralty Island walks through a field of flowering yarrow. The best time to visit the bears at Pack Creek is the last week of July through mid-August. There are always bears in the area, but they gather en masse around the creek when the salmon starting running. Admiralty Island referred to by the local Tlingit Indains as "Kootznoowoo" means "Fortress of the Bears." This island has the highest density of bears in the world with approximately one bear per ...

Theres is a saying in Alaska,"when the fireweed blooms top out and the white downy seeds take flight
summer is over." Juneau area and Southeast Alaska in general had the best summer anyone can remember. But, the rains returned this weekend and the fireweed has topped out. It is now time to get ready for the fall storms. I took this shot in late July along the Airport Dike Trail which is Juneau's most popular hiking trail. The image illustrates the month of August in my Juneau 2014 ...

Photographers including myself are not always the best editor of their images. A good rule of thumb in photo editing ones work is to get a second opinion. Michael Dinneen at Alaska Magazine in Anchorage is a wonderful shooter and really good photo editor. He is transforming the look of Alaska Magazine. At his request, I sent him a selection of images for a story on Tenakee. He chose the one above. Below Image 2833 is also of Tenakee, and I picked it for my 2014 Southeast Alaska ...

I am back and apologize for not keeping up with the weekly image. I got so busy traveling while shooting two state contracts that I was gone most of the summer. This image of the Fairweather Mountains in Glacier Bay National Park was taken from my good friends' front deck(Paul Johnson and Tami Mulick)at their Gull Cove Lodge overlooking Icy Strait. Having traveled all over the Alaska in search of tremendous locations, this view rates in the top two from the entire state. The other best ...

I took this photo on Tuesday, 7-23-2013. This field of fireweed islocated on Egan Expressway next to Temsco Helicopters across the highwayfrom Fred Meyers. The view of this area is one of Juneau's most stunningvistas. It is loved by all, the fireweed in the summer and the christmastree in the winter. But all this beauty might be gone in years to come.Bicknell, a local developer, has purchased this 82 arces and hopes to makea Comprehensive Plan Map G change that will ultimately make it ...

Alaska Magazine ran my image of brown bear at Pack Creek for cover story. The following is the caption they asked me to write. Photographing brown bears at Pack Creek on Admiralty Island is a tough shoot. There are easier places to get bear photos like Anan Creek, Brooks Camp, and McNiel River. But I like the look of the Pack Creek tidal flats. The US Forest Service who manages the area has just two small spots for the visiting public to view the action. One is on a sandy spit of land close ...
