My absolute favorite place to go cross-country skiing is Spaulding Meadows in the low mountains behind Auke Bay. For this early morning January shot, I helicoptered my friends, Jeff and Karen Wilson, up to the meadows to catch the sunrise light. We spend the day shooting and skiing before taking a helicopter back down in the failing light of the early evening. Every once in a while, I put a slide on the light table and stare in wonder. I ask myself if I really could have taken such a photo. This is one of those photos that I consider one of my best of all time. I was out in a boat with my friend and fellow wildlife junkie, Jim Collins. We were dead in the water when these three killer whales came barreling down on us. I was hanging over the edge of the boat, trying to get a low angle so that it would look like I was in the water with the ...

In 1997, the comet Hale Bopp was visible for almost the entire amazingly clear month of April. In early April, I had shot the comet over town but had completely blown my exposures. Every one, I knew was getting great images of the comet. So, toward the end of April and the comets viewing life, I decided to do another shoot. To my amazement and disbelief, the northern lights came out and somehow I got the exposure right
balanced between the comet, the northern lights and the city ...

This photo won the Alaska Department of Fish and Game photo contest many-many years ago and ran across two pages in National Wildlife Magazine. Besides winning all this accolades, what amazes me about this photo is that I took it out of my car window while parked in the Juneau Empires parking lot. This shot will always remind me that I will never know where or when a really good photo is going to happen. This image illustrates the month of September in my 2009 Juneau Alaska ...

The porcupine climbed an alder tree in my backyard, and I climbed the tree across from him with my 500mm f/4 in tow. I wanted to photograph the critter eye to eye. He was perched on a very wobbly branch. When I hit a burst on my motor drive, the unusual sound caught the animal off guard, and he almost fell off his branch. The photo captured his surprised, wide-eyed look as he was trying to hold on. This image illustrates the month of April in my 2009 Juneau Alaska Calendar which has ...

There has been a photo of Auke Lake in almost every one of my Juneau Calendars. The overwhelming richness of the deeply saturated colors attracted me to this image
the yellow plane set off against the super rich greens of the reeds and deep blue of the lake is almost unbelievable. Throw in the mirror reflection and this photo becomes one of my favorites. This image illustrates the month of August in my 2009 Juneau Alaska Calendar which has been published for 20 consecutive years. Nikon ...
