Mt McGinnis, Mt Stroller White, and the Mendenhall Glacier reflect in an open-water pond created by the flowing water of Steep Creek in winter. Green northern lights, or aurora borealis, stream in the sky above Lions Head Mountain in Berners Bay, while casting a mirror reflection in the calm waters of Echo Cove. I mentioned last week that I love snow and we just heard that the opening of Juneau’s Eaglecrest Ski Area has been moved up to this Saturday, November 28! I love snow, and the Juneau area has been getting hit with large dumps of snow for the past few days. The world of winter white looks great. Virgin snow and sunshine makes any place look oh-so perfect, yet last year our town did not get much snow, and I missed it. I love this view of the Sandy Beach pump house. On a clear winter morning in Juneau sunrise can be spectacular, especially in December around the time of solstice. In the winter the sun rises directly down channel from Juneau, giving the scene a surreal light. When I go out on a shoot I almost always have a definite image I am looking for. On the evening when I shot this photo I was camping on Thunder Mountain to shoot a cover image of hikers on the mountain with the glacier and mountains as a stunning backdrop (see image posted on 9-16-2015).
