Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image #2941

Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska – Image #2941

Mt McGinnis, Mt Stroller White, and the Mendenhall Glacier reflect in an open-water pond created by the flowing water of Steep Creek in winter. Juneau and Southeast Alaska experience warmer temperatures during the winter months compared to interior Alaska, and we often have open water in the middle of winter. Lucky me, as I am constantly looking for opportunities to shoot mirror reflections in open water to give an image more depth and dimension. This photo illustrates the month of January ...

Aurora, Echo Cove, Juneau, Alaska-Image #2940

Green northern lights, or aurora borealis, stream in the sky above Lions Head Mountain in Berners Bay, while casting a mirror reflection in the calm waters of Echo Cove. In Juneau, Alaska, the northern lights do not display as often or as strongly as for our Alaskan neighbors to the north, and of course a display is weather dependent. Juneau’s photo advantage over more northern displays is the great water reflections in the unfrozen ocean shoreline running the full length of the local road ...

Wedding Bowl, Mt Ben Stewart, Juneau – Image #2939

I mentioned last week that I love snow and we just heard that the opening of Juneau’s Eaglecrest Ski Area has been moved up to this Saturday, November 28! Juneau skiers and riders are having visions of knee deep powder. This is my son, Owen, skiing dream powder in Wedding Bowl on Mt. Ben Stewart just out of bounds from the ski area. I love all the white-on-white in this image; a great example of how the color white comes in so many tones and shades. Note the blues in the snow surface as ...

Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau, Alaska-Image #2938

I love snow, and the Juneau area has been getting hit with large dumps of snow for the past few days. The world of winter white looks great. Virgin snow and sunshine makes any place look oh-so perfect, yet last year our town did not get much snow, and I missed it. This shot is from the one day when I was able to shoot the magic of early morning light with hikers getting first tracks. I am looking forward to a winter full of snow and all the fun that goes with it. Enjoy the snow while it ...

Sandy Beach Pump House, Douglas, Alaska -Image #2937

I love this view of the Sandy Beach pump house. On a clear winter morning in Juneau sunrise can be spectacular, especially in December around the time of solstice. In the winter the sun rises directly down channel from Juneau, giving the scene a surreal light. I am often asked how much I digitally enhance my photos and the light in this image is how I saw it through my viewfinder and needed no digital enhancement. There are moments in Alaska when the light is so magnificent, it boggles my ...

Setting Moon, Icy Strait, Alaska-Image #2936

When I go out on a shoot I almost always have a definite image I am looking for. On the evening when I shot this photo I was camping on Thunder Mountain to shoot a cover image of hikers on the mountain with the glacier and mountains as a stunning backdrop (see image posted on 9-16-2015). Having a specific image to focus on in my head forces me out into the world to capture that image, and along the way other surprises may pop up. This shot was just such a surprise. I had no idea when or ...
