Denali (Mt. McKinley), Wonder Lake, Denali National Park, Alaska – Image 2655

Denali (Mt. McKinley), Wonder Lake, Denali National Park, Alaska – Image 2655

I ran much of this same caption with Image #2637 on 9-30-2010 which ended up as the cover of my Alaska book. This photo was shot just 15 minutes before the eventual cover image. I am showing this image to illustrate just how tough the editing decisions can be between two or three really successful images. Both would have been great covers, but I picked the one with the morning sunrise colors bathing the mountain range instead of the colored punctuate point of a cloud just above ...

Cross-country Skiing, Spaulding Meadows, Juneau , Alaska – Image 2653

Here, we are again...Spaulding Meadows. The meadows are absolutely my most favorite place to enjoy the snow and sunshine in Juneau area. I have never had a bad day in the meadows, and I have been there too many times to count. Spinning in a circle, one has views of Mendenhall Glacier, McGinnis Mountain, Mt Stroller White, Thunder Mountain, Gastineau Channel, the Juneau/Douglas bridge, the Coastal Range, Douglas Island, Admiralty Island, Lynn Canal, and the Chilkats Mountains. The ...

Rie Munoz, Mendenhall Game Refuge Wetlands, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2652

As a photojournalist I am asked to do portraits of people all of the time. One of my favorite subjects in Juneau is Rie Munoz. Rie is a neighbor, a friend and probably the most recognized and famous artist in Alaska. I have been fortunate to do about five photo sessions with her over the years. For all her fame and fortune, she is the most down to earth, pleasant person you would ever like to meet. She photographs so easy and so willing to take direction, I always look forward to a ...

Brown Bear Tagging, Chichagof Island, Alaska – Image 2651

For the first 15 years of my 30-plus years as a professional photographer, I worked as a newspaper photojournalist. I still love shooting photojournalism, but nature, wildlife and adventure photography are now paying the bills. While still working for the Juneau Empire (Juneau's only daily newspaper),I shot this image of two Alaska Department of Fish and Game employees, Kim Titus and LaVern Beier, radio collaring a large 700-plus pound spring bear which turns into a 900 pound fall bear. ...

Cover of Boy’s Life, November 2009 Issue – Image 2650

Boy's Life assigned me to photograph a story on a boy scout troop from Ohio that traveled to Alaska to fish the Kenai River. My images ran for six pages inside and on the cover. Boy's Life is the magazine for the Boy Scouts of America and has a circulation of over 1.2 million. Shooting a cover is tricky business. All covers are vertical, but I naturally see the world horizontally. Turning the camera vertical is awkward and unnatural. If photos were suppose to be vertical our eyes ...
Black Wolf “Romeo” Mendenhall Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2649

Black Wolf “Romeo” Mendenhall Lake, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2649

Surrounded by the Mendenhall Glacier and Towers, a black wolf the local Juneauites nicknamed, "Romeo," crosses the frozen Mendenhall Lake to get between his hunting grounds. Wolves mate for life and as the story goes, his pregnant mate was killed in the spring of 2002 on the road to the glacier visitor's center. Romeo showed up on the ice during the winter of 2002-03 and has remained in the area ever since as a lone wolf. His silhouette moving across the ice for the past six years has ...
