Mendenhall Glacier from Brotherhood Park, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2117

Mendenhall Glacier from Brotherhood Park, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2117

The Brotherhood Park, named for the Alaska Native Brotherhood, frames the Mendenhall Glacier. The meadow is a favorite wildflower walk for Juneauites. In early August, it is covered with fireweed blooms; earlier stages of summer display wild irises, Alaska cotton and chocolate lilies. The photo was taken with a Nikon F/5 camera body and a Nikor polarized 35-70mm zoom lens on Fuji Velvia slide film. This image illustrates the month of July in my 2002 Southeast calendar.-Mark Kelley

Kongakut River, Brooks Range, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska – Image 2115

The use of a slow shutter speed on my camera blended the fast flowing Kongakut River into a soft blur. I rafted sixty miles of the Kongakut River with my family and the guiding company Alaska Discovery. Except for two-half days of rain, we had 60 to 70 F degree temperatures and more caribou than mosquitos. I shot this photo with an Nikon F/5 equipped with a 20-35mm Nikkor zoom lens, polarized about 5:30 am on Fuji Velvia film rated at ISO 50.-Mark Kelley

Paddle Rafts on Kongakut River, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska – Image 2113

Every once in a while the Southeast Alaska Portfolio will wander around the state. I spent nine-days rafting the Kongakut River in the Northeast corner of Alaska. The Kongakut River cuts through the Brooks Range flowing north across the arctic coastal plain to the Arctic Ocean. Here the Alaska Discovery raft negotiates a set of rapids. Photographed with a Nikon F-5 camera with a 35 to 75mm F/2.8 Nikkor polarized lens on Fuji Velvia film. Thank you.-Mark Kelley

July 4th, 2000 fireworks over Gastineau Channel, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2112

I was looking for a different angle to shoot the annual July 4th fireworks. I got permision to shoot on top of an oil tank at Taku Oil for this photo. This shot was taken with a Nikon F/5 equipped with a Nikor 35-70mm F/2.8 lens on Fuji Velvia film pushed one stop. The exposure was unrecorded. This photo is the illustration for the month of July in the Juneau 2002 Calendar. Thank you.-Mark Kelley
Hoary Marmot, Dundas Bay, Alaska – Image 2111

Hoary Marmot, Dundas Bay, Alaska – Image 2111

A hoary marmot (Marmota caligata) watches for danger from eagles, foxes, wolves or bears in Dundas Bay, Glacier Bay National Park. When alarmed, the hoary marmot makes a loud whistle. Marmots are relatives of the squirrel; their front paws are clawed for digging burrows for their winter hibernation. Marmots are social animals and live in family burrows in larger colonies. This photo appears on page 56 of my Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska book.-Mark Kelley
