A mature bald eagle snatches a herring off the ocean's surface. In Southeast Alaska, we are lucky to have an estimated 10,000 eagles living as our neighbors. I love my many opportunities to photograph these beautiful birds. I shot this photo on a Nikon F4 with a 300mm F/4 lens on Velvia film pushed one stop to ASA 100.-Mark Kelley

I spent a week in Dry Bay in 1999 while shooting photos for my book on Glacier Bay National Park. While there, I came across these two lone paintbrushes growing up through a sea of beach pea. To emphasize this relation, I shot this photo with a 300mm lens with a large aperture (f/4) to drop the background flowers out of focus bringing the sharp focus on the paintbrush. I used a Nikon F/5 camera on a tripod and Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

The wooden structures in Hammer Slough are built on pilings to keep them dry during high tides. While in Juneau, I charted the Petersburg's high tides that corresponded with sunrise for the entire summer. Then I waited for a high tide in the morning on a clear day. When all the events aligned, I flew down to Petersburg the night before and was in position for this shot the next morning between 5 and 6am in early August. Hammer Slough is the town's most photographed attraction. Petersburg ...

Sometimes, I get lucky. The same evening I shot the previous photo of the sunset over Mt. Edgecumbe I shot this photo of downtown Sitka with the rapidly approaching storm clouds overtaking the dissappearing sunset. Sitka is a beautiful coastal fishing community on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska facing the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean. Sitka was once the capital of Russian America. On October 18, 1867, now celebrated as Alaska Day, Sitka was the site of the formal transfer of ...

Mt. Edgecumbe, an extinct volcano on Kruzoff Island, is a landmark on the Sitka skyline. The October suns sets almost directly behind Mt. Edgecumbe and I shot this from the top of Harbor Mountain behind Sitka. I used Velvia film, and shot with a Nikon F4 camera with a 20-35mm F/2.8 zoom lens.-Mark Kelley

A Wings of Alaska Otter airplane piloted by Juneau pilot, Rusty Staub, flies over the Juneau Icefield. The icefield consists of about 1,500 square miles of ice sprawling from Juneau east over the border to Canada and north almost to Skagway in Southeast Alaska. This Rhode Island-sized ice mass spawns more than 30 major glaciers including the Mendenhall, the Herbert and the Taku. I shot this photo in May from chase plane using a Nikon F3 camera and a 20-35mm F/2.8 zoom lens with a ...
