The red northern lights appear above the spruce trees at the end of DouglasIsland. The most common color seen during northern lights displays is greenwith red being one of the least common colors seen. My northern lightsexposures for an ASA 100 slide film range from 30 to 90 seconds at f/2.8.The variation takes into an account the intensity of the the display. Some friends and I decided to ski up to Spaulding Meadows just above AukeBay in Juneau. The trail is a three-mile ski with an 1,800 foot elevationgain. From cabin located at the top of the trail, we would ski down toPeterson Lake and then out to the road. It took us all day and in total wecovered around 13 miles. The dogs did well. Every November the largest collection of bald eagles in the world amassalong a 21-mile stretch of the Chilkat River just outside the small town ofHaines, Alaska. The river is kept open from freezing by some hot springswhich in turns supports a late salmon run. With most of the other rivers inAlaska frozen shut, the eagles collect along this river by the thousands. This photo illustrates the month of November in my Southeast 2005 Calendar.Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor, ...

Southeast Alaska had experienced an incredibly warm, sunny week in earlyNovember of 1998. I hopped on a plane in Juneau and flew to Yakutat. FromYakutat, I chartered a plane with balloon tires to land me on the beach toshoot this scene. I stayed the day, bagged this scene, and got picked upright before nightfall. A photo from this shoot ended up in my book onGlacier Bay. This photo illustrates the month of December in my Southeast2005 Calendar. Camera: Nikon F5, Lens: 35-70mm f/2.8 ...
