Lituya Bay, Alaska – Image 2110

Lituya Bay, on the western edge of Glacier Bay National Park, is the site of dramatic and deadly earthquakes and landslides. In 1958, an earthquake set off in turn a landslide, a splash that climbed 1,720, the crumbling of the face of Lituya Glacier, and a massive wave that carried three fishing boats out of the bay, killing two people. This photo is pictured on page 53 of my Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska book.-Mark Kelley

Tree Carving, Juneau, Alaska – Image 2109

Rick Beasley has revived the Haines Tlingit area historic practice of tree carving. Traditionally, the tree carvings were used as trail markers. Through commissions, Rick has completed four tree carvings in Juneau and two in Bartlett Cove. I shot this photo using a Nikor F5 with a 80-200mm f.2.8 zoom lens on Fuji Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

Cruise ship in Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness – Image 2108

On assignment for this cruise ship company, I shot this photo out of the open door of a helicopter. Forty-five miles south of Juneau, Tracy Arm is an emerald green ribbon of water, dead-ending in two glaciers. This is a favorite day cruise of many Juneauites. I shot this photo using a Nikon F5 with a 20-35mm polarized zoom f2.8 lens on Fuji Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

Sitka black-tailed deer are the only native deer found in Southeast Alaska. Average weight for an adult is about 80 to 120 pounds depending on the gender, and they have an average life span of 10 years. I shot this photo using a Nikon F5 with a Nikor 300mm f/4 lens on Fuji Velvia 35mm film. The photo appeared in my 1991 Southeast Alaska Calendar.-Mark Kelley

Funter Bay, Admiralty Island Wilderness Homestead, Admiralty Island – Image 2106

Every spring for the past couple of years, my family has spent my wife's birthday at our friend's lodge at Funter Bay. The owners, Joe, Karey and Christine, are good friends. Every year the days are spent watching bears, deer and eagles from the deck and fishing for cutthroat, king salmon and dollies. The main guest house is pictured. I shot this photo with a Nikon F5 using a polarized 20-35mm f/2.8 lens on Fuji Velvia film.-Mark Kelley

Glacier Bear, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska – Image 2045

A glacier bear is a genetic variation of a black bear. Its fur is not jet black but frosted with color variations running from reddish to pure silver. This bear is only found in Northern Southeast Alaska, with concentrations in Glacier Bay and Yakutat. I shot this photo using a Nikon F5 with a Nikor 500mm f/4 lens on Fuji Velvia 35mm film. This photo can be found on p. 68 in my book on Glacier Bay National Park: Alaska.-Mark Kelley
