The first snow fall happens in Juneau sometime in late October or early November. I love photographing Auke Lake. What makes this photo work for me is the mirror reflection of the house lights and snow capped mountains. I shot this photo in early November. After shooting this image, I returned the next evening to work on the shot some more. Showing up 24 hours later, the lake had frozen and the mirror reflection was gone. I waited for years (over 15) for the same set of circumstances to ...

The color in this photo is for real. I think a lot of viewers will think that I super-saturated the color in my computer...not true. This was one of the most spectacular sunsets that I have ever seen, and the color is faithful to my memory of the event. This brings up a problem that I have with shooting digital. Do not get me wrong...I love shooting digitally. But, for almost 25 years I shot color slides, and when I put the slides on the light table I could immediately see the color. ...

I have shot a lot of whale photos and have a published book on whales. The color space for most whale images ends up being predominantly black and blue. It is always great when the environment allows a new color space. To get these different color spaces, usually means shooting at the edges of light in the early morning or late evening. The problem is that it is difficult to be out on the water during these critical hours. I shot this photo when I was the photo leader on a week-long ...

Of all the Alaska towns that I have visited, which is a lot, I think Haines has the most scenic setting. I shot this photo during the morning's first light in August. Luckily, the morning light coincided with the low tide, and I was able to get the mirror reflection of town in the small ponds left by the receding tide. I had pre-visualized this scenic with a mirror reflection, and this image would not have been as successful without the reflection. Upon arriving, I realized the large ...

I have been watching this field of fireweed for years. The field is right by the pond next to Temsco at the airport. Twenty years ago this area barely had any fireweed. I can see this view from Egan Highway. The only problem is that as soon as I get out of the car and off the road, I lose aerial perspective that shows the mountains. The mountains disappear from the frame. The mountains help make this photo. For years I wondered how to keep them in the frame. Last summer (2009) I ...

There are about two weeks left in the cruise ship tourism season in Southeast Alaska. Everything is is slowing up with the official end of the season on September 28. This photo is a quintessential tourism image in Alaska. It features, the Mendenhall Glacier, the Mendenhall River, fireweed and a great mountain vista as the backdrop. Shot in early August in 2009 the rich greens and splash of the red fireweed gives a warmth to the image that makes this place very friendly and inviting. ...
